Fifa finally releases damaging report on Qatar's World Cup bid...

FIFA on Tuesday released a long-withheld report on alleged corruption in awarding the 2022 World Cup to Qatar after more leaks deepened the controversy surrounding the vote.

World football's governing body had previously declined to publish in full the 400-page report into awarding the 2018 World Cup to Russia and the 2022 edition to Qatar drawn up by US independent investigator Michael Garcia.

But FIFA's hand was forced when German tabloid newspaper Bild said it had obtained the full report and released extracts on Monday, including revelations that a ten-year-old daughter of one FIFA member had received $2 million in her bank account.

FIFA said it was already considering releasing in full Garcia's findings prior to the latest disclosures.

"However, as the document has been illegally leaked to a German newspaper, the new chairpersons (of the committee) have requested the immediate publication of the full report...in order to avoid the dissemination of any misleading information," FIFA explained in a statement on its website. Edward Snowden: “Knowledge Has To Originate From Somewhere, And That Can’t Be A Classroom.”

(...)

In school, we are simply taught to obey and memorize. If we don’t, we are punished. Each child is required to learn the accepted version of reality in order to fit into the specific mould necessary for us to become “productive” members of society. We are taught to be like everybody else, to never question the information we are given, and to move on and be a “product-full” member of society. Just like television, much of traditional education is simply programming. We are told we must do well in school in order to get a job so we can make money and pay our bills. It has nothing to do with the type of growth a human being needs. Good grades and marks do not signify intelligence. In school we are shown how to obey authority, how the world works, and what intelligence is — and is not.

Modern day education is heavily marketed as a place for us to learn, but is that really what it is? It’s just like many pharmaceutical grade medications — do they really heal, or have we simply been made to believe they do?

Prior to the late 1800s, education was a private practice that took place in private institutions or through home schooling. That all changed in 1902 when John D. Rockefeller created the General Education Board in conjunction with Frederick T. Gates, his close friend and business/personal advisor. The General Education Board was responsible for funding the American public school system, and provided over one hundred million dollars in 1902 while continuing their support beyond 1902. If we follow the money, it becomes clear that the GEB was responsible for the creation of the American public school system. Full story...

Is India descending into mob rule?

On Thursday a 15-year-old Muslim boy, returning home from Eid shopping with his three brothers, was killed in a brutal assault by a mob of about 20 men on a train in the north Indian state of Haryana.

Police say that the reason for Junaid Khan's murder - in which his three siblings were also injured by the knife-wielding mob - was mainly because of a row over seat space on the train.

But a man arrested for being part of the mob said on TV that he was goaded into it by others because Muslims ate beef.

Shaqir, one of the surviving brothers, told reporters in the hospital that the attackers "flung our skull caps, pulled my brother's beard, slapped us, and taunted us about eating beef".

Under Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist BJP, the cow has become a polarising animal and religious divisions are widening. Restrictions on the sale and slaughter of cows are fanning confusion and vigilantism. Full story...

Globe-trotting royals are costing a king's ransom: Taxpayers' £154,000 bill for first trip on 'cost-cutting' royal jet as cost of travel soars by £4.5m in a year (and Queen gets an 8% 'pay rise')

Taxpayers face a bill of up to £154,000 for the first official trip on the new 'cost-cutting' royal jet, Buckingham Palace accounts reveal today.

The invoice, for Prince Charles and his wife the Duchess of Cornwall to go on a tour to Romania, Italy and Austria this March, is expected to be the single most expensive journey taken by a member of the Royal Family in the past year.

Their plane, an RAF-operated converted Voyager – nicknamed Cam Force One after former prime minister David Cameron, who sanctioned it – was refitted at a cost of £10million to provide official transport for Government ministers and members of the Royal Family.

Royal officials have 'not yet received the bill' from the RAF for Charles's nine-day trip but have been given three estimates. The highest of the three, which features in the royal accounts released today, is £154,000.

In all, £4.5million was spent on royal travel in 2016/2017 – a rise of £500,000 or 12.5 per cent, on the previous year.

Senior royals clocked up 65 overseas visits between them, to places as far flung as Bhutan, Malaysia and Bahrain. Full story...

The criminal who inspired a new currency...

As my train travelled through the mountainous Rhône Valley in southern Switzerland, it was plain to see what this region is known for. Terraced vineyards carpeted the slopes, while fruit trees covered the valley floor: apple, pear and especially apricot, from which the area makes its famous schnapps, Abricotine.

The people in the Swiss canton of Valais are rightly proud of their home-grown products. And so it’s perhaps no surprise that they are now embracing a home-grown way to buy them.

In May 2017, a group of Valais residents launched a new regional currency. Like the UK’s Bristol pound and the the Franco-Spanish Basque region's Eusko, it’s a complementary rather than replacement currency. Its banknotes are worth the same as Swiss francs – the country’s official currency – but can only be spent in participating businesses in the Valais, which so far includes more than 150 restaurants, artisans, farm shops and wineries.

It’s a local initiative, backed by local people, that aims to boost the local economy, so it is apt that it’s been given a name with such local meaning: Farinet. Full story...

India hotel refuses room to solo female traveller...

The plight of a female artist who was refused a hotel room in the southern city of Hyderabad as she was a solo traveller has gone viral in India.

Nupur Saraswat, a spoken word artist, told the BBC she was in the city for a performance but was told by her hotel that "single ladies" were not allowed.

The hotel has argued that the area it is in "is not [the] right place" for single women.

Under the hotel policies, "locals and unmarried couples" are also forbidden.

Ms Saraswat, who lives in Singapore, wrote about Friday morning's incident at Hotel Deccan Erragadda on her Facebook page. Full story...

"No religion" is now Australia's number one religion...

Australia remains a fairly religious country, with 60% of people reporting a religious affiliation.

In 1966 only 0.8% of Australians ticked the box for "No religion", which includes atheists, secularists and agnostics.

The proportion of people reporting no religion increased to 29.6% in 2016 – up from 22% five years ago, and nearly double the 16% reported in 2001.

Those aged from 18 to 34 were most likely to report not having a religion (39%) than other age groups. Those aged 65 years and over were more likely to report a religious affiliation.

Christianity is still the most common religion (52% of Australians identified as any of the Christian denominations) but has been declining in popularity in Australia for the past 50 years - in 1966, 88% of Australians identified as Christian and by 1991 it was 74%. Full story...

Bloodied and broken: The battle against ISIS in the Philippines...

During the rainy season on the southern Philippines island of Mindanao, storms are foreshadowed by flashes of lightning in the distance, visible above the treetops.

When the rain finally comes, it is a vicious, torrential downpour, which ends as abruptly as it begins.

While the rains come and go, the flow of wounded into a military hospital in the north of the island does not. Just as two ambulances pull into the hospital at Camp Evangelista in Cagayan de Oro, the skies once again open up, muddying the dirt courtyard. They discharge yet another 10 soldiers, wounded in what is becoming a bloody, protracted insurgency by ISIS-affiliated militants.

Lt. Col. Jonna Dalaguit, the facility's chief medical officer, looks exhausted from the constant stream of broken men who are ferried into her hospital, brought in displaying the wounds of war -- "bullet wounds, blast wounds, fractures," she tells CNN.

"We have (admitted around) 330 casualties since day two of this crisis." It's the worst count she's ever seen. Full story...

Italy forced to bail out two more banks for 5.2bn euros...

Italy's government is bailing out two banks in the Venice region at a cost of 5.2bn euros (£4.6bn; $5.8bn).

The move comes two days after the European Central Bank warned that Banca Popolare di Vicenza and Veneto Banca were failing or likely to fail.

The banks' "good" assets will be taken on by Intesa Sanpaolo banking group.

Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni said the rescue was needed to protect savers and ensure "the good health of our banking system".

The two banks' branches and employees will be part of Intesa by Monday morning in a move designed to avoid a potential run on deposits that could have spread to other Italian banks. Full story...

Congo president's daughter charged with corruption in France...

Investigators have widened a corruption probe into the French assets of three African ruling families, charging the daughter and son-in-law of Congo's President Denis Sassou Nguesso, judicial sources told AFP on Sunday.

Julienne Sassou Nguesso, 50, and her 53-year-old husband Guy Johnson were placed under investigation this week for "money laundering and misuse of public funds", the sources said.

Investigators are trying to determine how the couple in 2006 were able to purchase a mansion valued at 3 million euros ($3.4 million) in the swanky Paris suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine just north of the ritzy 16th arrondissement, according to a judicial source.

The tentacles of the case also reach out to ruling families in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. Full story...

How the government conditions citizens to obey...

Can you count how many ways the government manipulates people to be the type of citizen they can easily control?

I think that would be impossible to come up with an actual number when every facet of government is dedicated to shaping the citizen in ways contrary to his or her nature.

It ranges from tax credits for having kids to increased welfare for being a single mom; from subsidies for growing corn to mandates to eradicate invasive species. The government is changing citizens’ behavior with incentives and disincentives, which destroys the natural spontaneous order society would otherwise fall into.

The government has basically turned society into a pinball machine which bounces citizens from here to there, taking away control of their destiny. And then, they use their own coercion as an example of why we need more coercion: because people cannot control their own outcomes in life!

Governments and corporations alike know that the best way to mold a person is to start in childhood. Full story...

UAE princesses guilty of servant abuse in Belgium...

Eight princesses from the UAE have been convicted of human trafficking and degrading treatment of their servants by a Brussels court.

They were given 15-month suspended jail terms and ordered to pay €165,000 (£145,000; $185,000) each, with half the sum suspended.

They were accused of holding more than 20 servants they brought with them on a 2008 visit in near slavery.

But they were acquitted of the more serious charge of inhumane treatment.

The princesses had denied all the charges. Full story...

Lionel Messi's 21-month prison sentence set to be swapped for fine worth less than one week's wage...

The maximum fine would be €255,000, on top of a nearly €2m fine paid by the 29-year-old as part of last year's sentence.

Messi and his father Jorge were found guilty by a Catalan court last July on three counts of tax fraud between 2007 and 2009 Getty

The Barcelona state prosecutor said on Friday it was not opposed to substituting a 21-month prison sentence for a fine for tax fraud handed down to Lionel Messi, as long as the fine was the maximum allowed under law.

The maximum fine would be €255,000, on top of a nearly €2m fine paid by the 29-year-old as part of last year's sentence.

Neither is the prosecutor opposed to suspending the Barcelona players's prison sentence, and that of his father, on proviso that they have no more brushes with the law for three years given that both have had clean criminal records up to now.

The decision means that the 21-month prison sentence has been swapped for a fine worth less than Messi’s weekly wage.

Messi and his father Jorge were found guilty by a Catalan court last July on three counts of tax fraud between 2007 and 2009 to the tune of €4.1m on image rights.

The Argentine was never expected to serve time in jail. Under the Spanish system prison terms of under two years can be served under probation.

The judge in charge of the case will now make a decision bearing in mind the prosecutor's recommendations. Judges usually follow the state prosecutor's recommendations in Spain. Source...

Hiding in secret underground bunkers, eating wild birds and pets and saving secretaries but not wives: How government elites planned to survive a nuclear attack...

America built a secret network of remote underground bunkers during the Cold War in case of a nuclear strike by the Russians.

But they were not made to protect civilians - the hideouts were just for top government officials.

In a plan as brutal as it was logical, the President and his inner circle would be saved while tens of millions of ordinary Americans would be incinerated.

Realizing that there was no way to save the population, the conclusion was that 'the government would protect itself and let the rest of us die' writes national security expert Garrett M. Graff.

According to his new book, 'Raven Rock: The Story of the US Government's Secret Plan to Save Itself', the governments of Presidents Kennedy, Eisenhower, Roosevelt and Truman publicly assured people that a nuclear strike could be survivable.  Full story...

No classrooms, lessons or homework: New Zealand school where children are free to roam...

Deep among the streams and Kauri trees of rural south Auckland, New Zealand’s newest and most alternative school is in session. The weather is fine so a bout of fishing is in order, followed by lunch cooked on an open fire. Homework and classes? Indefinitely dismissed.

“We are called a school but we look nothing like any school out there,” says Joey Moncarz, co-founder and head teacher at Deep Green Bush School, which is in term two of its inaugural year.

“We don’t do things like telling kids it is time to write or learn maths. When they are interested in doing it, they do it.”

Moncarz is an ex-mainstream teacher. After five, frustrating years in mainstream schools in New Zealand he quit to found Deep Green Bush school, which has a roll of eight, and no classroom walls, time-out chairs or tests. Full story...

Singapore PM apologizes for family feud but denies siblings' allegations...

Singapore's Prime Minister has made a rare public apology for a family spat that has gripped a city unused to elites airing their grievances.

Lee Hsien Loong refuted allegations that he has violated the will of his late father, Singapore's former leader Lee Kuan Yew, for his own political gain.

"I deeply regret that this dispute has affected Singapore's reputation and Singaporean's confidence in the government. As your Prime Minister, I apologize to you for this," Lee said in a video statement posted to Facebook that also aired on national TV.

The high esteem in which most Singaporeans hold their former leader and the city-state's strict censorship laws have made the public spat something of a political soap opera for the Singapore's 5.5 million people. The extent of any political fallout is still unclear. Full story...

Indian government: pregnant women should shun meat, eggs and lustful thoughts of sex...

India’s government is advising pregnant women to avoid all meat, eggs and lustful thoughts.

Doctors say the advice is preposterous, and even dangerous, considering India’s already poor record with maternal health. Women are often the last to eat or receive health care in traditionally patriarchal Indian households.

Malnutrition and anaemia, or iron deficiency, are key factors behind India having one of the world’s highest rates of maternal mortality, with 174 of every 100,000 pregnancies resulting in the mother’s death in 2015. That’s better than five years earlier, when the maternal mortality rate was 205 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, but still far worse than China’s 27 per 100,000 or the United States’ 14 per 100,000, according to Unicef.

“The government is doling out unscientific and irrational advice, instead of ensuring that poor pregnant women get to eat a nutritious, high-protein diet,” said gynaecologist Arun Gadre, who is based in the western Indian city of Pune but works in rural areas. Full story...

One million sign petition for EU Monsanto weedkiller ban...

More than one million people have signed a petition demanding the EU ban the Monsanto weedkiller glyphosate over fears it causes cancer, campaigners said Thursday.

The petition comes as the European Union is deciding whether to renew the licence of the controversial herbicide produced by the US agro-chemicals giant.

Glyphosate is used in the best-selling herbicide Roundup.

"In less than five months, more than one million EU citizens have joined our call for a glyphosate ban," said David Schwartz, coordinator at the European Citizens Initiative, which is behind the petition.

"European citizens aren't fooled by the pesticide industry's lobbying efforts or the faulty science it's peddling," he added.

The group said it had attained the signature threshold to require a formal response from the European Commission -- one million names from at least seven countries -- in record time. Full story...

Putin offers political asylum to James Comey, citing potential prosecution in U.S.

"What's the difference between the FBI director and Mr. Snowden?" Russian President Vladimir Putin asked Thursday during his yearly live call-in show, saying that he would offer political asylum to fired FBI head James Comey in the same way Russia has sheltered former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.

By phrasing a question uniquely constructed for these unusual times, Putin put a new spin on the ongoing saga over Russia's tampering in the U.S. election, links between President Trump's inner circle and Russia, and allegations that the president tried to stop at least one line of inquiry.

Comey recently testified that Trump fired him after asking him to end the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn — a request that Comey says he memorialized in personal notes that he allowed to be leaked to the media.

"[Comey] said he'd written down his conversation with President [Trump] and handed it to the media through a friend of his," Putin said, according to a translation by Radio Free Europe. "This does sound and look odd: the director of a security service making records of his talks with the supreme commander and handing it over to the media through a friend of his." Full story...

Italy's northern regions are challenging a mandatory vaccine law...

Several regions in northern Italy are challenging a recently passed law which made 12 vaccinations mandatory for children starting at state school.

Italy's cabinet approved the vaccine law in mid-May, making it compulsory for all school starters to have a set of 12 vaccinations.

But in Veneto, the regional government said on Tuesday that its lawyers were preparing to challenge the decree in Italy's Constitutional Court, and that the legal challenge would be ready in around two weeks.

"Let's be clear; we are not against vaccines; we are against making them obligatory," explained regional governor Luca Zaia, who belongs to the Northern League. Full story...

Singapore’s Lee family feud rages online...

Some emotionally charged Facebook posts that came out in the wee hours Wednesday morning have laid bare a new episode in the feud among the children of the late Singapore founding father Lee Kuan Yew.

It’s clear that Lee’s eldest son, the city state’s incumbent prime minister Lee Hsien Loong, has some extra damage control to do after the posts gave fresh evidence of the long-running travails between him and his two younger siblings.

In a seemingly orchestrated move, a six-page open letter, headlined “What has happened to Lee Kuan Yew’s values”, by Lee’s brother Hsien Yang and sister Wei Ling, was posted on their respective Facebook pages early Wednesday morning.

The statement contains a barrage of allegations against the Lion City’s top leader and his wife, Ho Ching, with the crux of the row being the fate of the elder Lee’s residence. Full story...

Trump sells Qatar $12 billion of U.S. weapons days after accusing it of funding terrorism...

While President Trump berates Qatar for sponsoring terrorism at the highest levels, he is simultaneously authorizing the country to purchase over $21 billion of U.S. weapons.

One part of the deal was inked on Wednesday in Washington, D.C., when Qatar's Defense Minister met with U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis.

"We are pleased to announce today the signing of the letter of offer and acceptance for the purchase of the F-15QA fighter jets, with an initial cost of $12 billion dollars," read the Qatari Defense Minister's statement on Wednesday afternoon. "We believe that this agreement will propel Qatar's ability to provide for its own security while also reducing the burden placed upon the United States military in conducting operations against violent extremism."

The Qatari ambassador to the U.S. tweeted a photo of the signing. Full story...

The world’s most mysterious book...

Macron, not Le Pen, to turn state of emergency into common law...

Emmanuel Macron very quickly made it official: He will introduce a bill which will transform extraordinary state of emergency powers into regular police practice.

According to Le Monde, which saw a leaked copy of the bill: “…almost all the measures of the state of emergency will be found in common law.”

What this means is that the post-Charlie Hebdo war hysteria has not only never stopped, but will have become the new, permanent normal: Anyone can be arrested, searched and detained with just a simple accusation. Judges simply need to be “informed”; police have carte blanche.

So…when can I start referring to France as an “authoritarian state” without getting edited?

LOL, I don’t know what it would actually require to finally start calling that spade a “spade”…. I am reminded that Confucius’ “rectification of names” doctrine shows that the failure to call things by their proper names can only lead to social disorder. Full story...

Why are we attacking the Syrians who are fighting ISIS?

Just when you thought our Syria policy could not get any worse, last week it did. The US military twice attacked Syrian government forces from a military base it illegally occupies inside Syria. According to the Pentagon, the attacks on Syrian government-backed forces were “defensive” because the Syrian fighters were approaching a US self-declared “de-confliction” zone inside Syria. The Syrian forces were pursuing ISIS in the area, but the US attacked anyway.

The US is training yet another rebel group fighting from that base, located near the border of Iraq at al-Tanf, and it claims that Syrian government forces pose a threat to the US military presence there. But the Pentagon has forgotten one thing: it has no authority to be in Syria in the first place! Neither the US Congress nor the UN Security Council has authorized a US military presence inside Syria.

So what gives the Trump Administration the right to set up military bases on foreign soil without the permission of that government? Why are we violating the sovereignty of Syria and attacking its military as they are fighting ISIS? Why does Washington claim that its primary mission in Syria is to defeat ISIS while taking military actions that benefit ISIS? Full story...

Theresa May to launch wide-ranging internet controls aimed at 'regulating cyberspace' and giving security services more powers...

Theresa May looks set to launch wide-ranging internet regulation and plans to fundamentally change how technology works despite not having won a majority.

In the speech in which she committed to keep governing despite calls to stand down, the prime minister made reference to extending powers for the security services.

Those powers – which include regulation of the internet and forcing internet companies to let spies read everyone's private communications – were a key part of the Conservative campaign, which failed to score a majority in the House of Commons.

In the speech, given in Downing Street after losing her majority but still looking to form a government, she laid out a series of plans that she hopes to carry out at what she called a "critical time for our country".

One of those will be "cracking down on the ideology of Islamist extremism and all those who support it," she said in the short speech. And she will also "give the police and the authorities the powers they need to keep our country safe". Full story...

The sideshow that never leaves town...

(...)

What has emerged from the politicization of our lives – a process that has made us subservient to institutional interests – is the “size theory of social misery” so well described by Leopold Kohr. We have allowed ourselves to be burdened by a supra-institutional body, the political Establishment; an entity owned and controlled by self-appointed elites who have an interest in keeping mankind under their domination at the base of their pyramidal structures of power. Schools and the mainstream media have been the principal tools with which to condition and reinforce the conditioning in our imposed duty of obedience to the state.

Both the purpose and effect of all this is to train us in the skills that will be useful to the established order. It is not to help us learn how to think independently, how to make relevant distinctions, how to explore reality and values that lie beyond the boundaries set for us, how to discriminate between truth and fashion, how to be self-directed in our thinking and actions, and how to live for our own purposes. In your own experiences, has your formal schooling or encounters with the establishment media served any of the ends that enhanced your individuality?

Trained to serve the power structure that presumes to have authority over us, we are quite familiar with the verb form of the word train. But the noun usage of that word tells us something of what we have become. “Training” produces a “train,” which one dictionary informs us is “a succession of pack animals traveling in the same direction.” What better description of what we have allowed ourselves to become: both the means and the ends by which otherwise self-directed individuals are compacted into one manageable herd of indistinguishable parts. The U.S. government’s collectivist motto, e pluribus unum, is an open admission of the dehumanized and morally obscene nature of the state. Full story...

School bans unvaccinated kids after immunized children start chickenpox outbreak...

Close to one-quarter of students at a California elementary school have been directed by school officials to stay home for three weeks due to a small onset of chickenpox cases that began in March.

The chickenpox outbreak at Mariposa School of Global Education in Augora Hills, California is unique because the first case of chickenpox discovered at the school was found in a student who had been fully vaccinated.

Daniel Stepenosky, the superintendent of Las Virgenes Unified School District that includes the Mariposa School, acknowledged to CBS Los Angeles that three students were found to have chickenpox. “A kindergartener, a first-grader, a third-grader. The first case happened around mid-March. The student was immunized, however still contracted chickenpox.”

According to local newspaper, The Acorn, Stepenosky noted that “(It’s) interesting . . . the first of three cases was a student that was fully immunized. . . . He was the vaccinated one.” Full story...

Postman behind online game where teenagers are made to kill themselves is arrested in Russia...

The man allegedly behind a new teenage online death group, similar to the 'Blue Whale' game, has been detained in Russia.

Postman Ilya Sidorov, 26, confessed to seeking to coax its members - believed to be as many as 32 mainly underprivileged schoolchildren - to commit suicide.

The sobbing Moscow resident told state investigators he developed an elaborate online game involving 50 tasks which culminated in the teenagers killing themselves.

He broke down as he was interrogated on his role in demanding that a schoolgirl should 'jump under a metro train at a certain station'.

Sidorov was asked in a shocking video questioning: 'What was the final task? How does the game end?'

He replied: 'To commit suicide.' Full story...

Japan has a chicken sandwich with hot sauce so spicy you have to sign a consent form to eat it...

For a while, it seemed like whatever psychotherapy Lotteria’s chefs were undergoing was working. It’d been months since Japan’s craziest fast food chain had released a hamburger with super-stretchy cheese, purple sauce, or ten patties and an anime tie-in.

But apparently Lotteria’s chefs have busted out of the asylum, and they’ve created something that’s, by the standards of the company itself, litigiously insane. On June 8, Lotteria began selling what it calls the Death Spicy Tandoori Chicken Sandwich, and if you want it as spicy as possible, you’re required to sign a liability waiver before they’ll serve you.

Lotteria has actually added three spicy sandwiches simultaneously to its menu. There’s the standard Karakuchi (“Spicy”) Tandoori Chicken Sandwich, and above that in the pantheon there’s the Umakara (“Deliciously Spicy”) Tandoori Chicken Sandwich and the Gekikara (Shockinlgy Spicy) Tandoori Chicken Sandwich. Pity the nation...

Pity the nation whose people are sheep,
and whose shepherds mislead them.
Pity the nation whose leaders are liars, whose sages are silenced,
and whose bigots haunt the airwaves.
Pity the nation that raises not its voice,
except to praise conquerors and acclaim the bully as hero
and aims to rule the world with force and by torture.
Pity the nation that knows no other language but its own
and no other culture but its own.
Pity the nation whose breath is money
and sleeps the sleep of the too well fed.
Pity the nation — oh, pity the people who allow their rights to erode
and their freedoms to be washed away.
My country, tears of thee, sweet land of liberty.

MIT/IPCC Scientist Shares The Truth About Global Warming/Climate Change Science...

We have reached a dangerous state of scientific tyranny. People are ridiculed and even vilified for questioning the prevailing narratives about the nature of our world, but this counters the true meaning of science. At its core, science is about questioning what we think we know.

“A central lesson of science is that to understand complex issues (or even simple ones), we must try to free our minds of dogma and to guarantee the freedom to publish, to contradict, and to experiment. Arguments from authority are unacceptable.”
— Carl Sagan

Today, many scientific assumptions have transformed into scientific dogmas. In almost every field of science, from the study of consciousness, to modern day medicine, to food and drugs, controversy and corruption exist. As many whistleblowers have revealed, big corporations have a monopoly on science and control what gets published and enters the public domain.

Dr. Diane Harper, for example, one of a mere handful of experts on the human papillomavirus (HPV) and one of the leading researchers in biomedical science, has pointed to this fact a number of times, specifically with regards to Gardasil, the HPV vaccine. She has spent her life studying vaccines; she was the principle investigator of both HPV vaccines — Gardasil manufactured by Merck, and Cervarix manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. In multiple interviews she’s stated how the vaccine was approved and fast-tracked before all of the science had been completed. Full story...

United Airlines faces more problems after injured wheelchair-bound woman sues...

A handicapped Florida woman, who claims she fell after an airport employee dropped her, has filed a lawsuit against United Airlines and its contracted workers.

Erica Fulton, of Largo, Florida, was flying out of Houston’s Bush Airport with United Airlines last September when an airport employee picked her up to help her into her seat.

The employee reportedly continued to reassure Fulton that he “got” her while transporting her from her wheelchair to her seat, but Fulton said she knew he didn’t.

“Once he got me totally upright, I just saw this look of panic in his face,” Fulton told WFLA. “I said, ‘Oh my God, he’s gonna drop me.”

Fulton, who has a degenerative disease that requires her to use a wheelchair, said she fell over, and all of her weight landed on her right shoulder and tore muscles in her arm.

“The pain was excruciating,” said Fulton. “I had tears rolling down my face.” Full story...

Man jailed for 35 years in Thailand for insulting monarchy on Facebook...

A Thai man has been jailed for 35 years for Facebook posts deemed insulting to the royal family, a watchdog said, in one of the harshest sentences handed down for a crime that insulates Thailand’s ultra-rich monarchy from criticism.

A Bangkok military court convicted him of 10 counts of lese-majesty for posting photos and videos of the royal family on a Facebook account that purported to belong to a different user.

Wichai, 34, whose last name was withheld to protect his relatives from ostracism, was accused of using the account to slander a former friend, said iLaw, a group that tracks royal defamation cases.

“The court punished him with seven years per count. Altogether he was given 70 years, but it was reduced in half because he confessed,” said Yingcheep Atchanont from iLaw. Full story...

Saudi women are going to jail for driving cars, fleeing abusers...

How would you like to wear a black blanket in the desert heat and remain legally a child your entire life, banned from moving about without male supervision or a chaperone, thrown in jail for driving a car or running away from an abusive man?

Welcome to the world of women in Saudi Arabia, America’s foremost Middle Eastern ally, where misogyny is still a quaint cultural custom. Despite a social media campaign by and for Saudi women’s rights activists, and tweets and other signs of support from younger members of the royal family, the Kingdom keeps throwing women in jail for demanding basic human rights: the freedom to move and to be free of domestic violence.

A new book, Daring to Drive, by the Saudi exile and feminist activist Manal al-Sharif, was published this week in the midst of a new spate of female jailings. Al-Sharif, one of the founders of the Women2Drive movement, shares memories of growing up in Saudi Arabia and confronting the myriad medieval rules and regulations the Saudi government enforces in order to keep women down. The 81-year-old bin-woman with a PhD...

An 81-year-old who set up an all-woman rubbish collection team in her village in Lebanon now has a stream of visitors asking how she did it. For nine months in 2015 and 2016 rubbish piled up on the streets of the capital, Beirut, and even now a lack of landfill sites means some of the city's waste is being thrown in the sea. Zeinab Mokalled has shown that when government fails, do-it-yourself local initiatives can work.

"There used to be dirt everywhere and the kids were filthy," Zeinab Mokalled tells me.

She is remembering the 1980s and 90s, when Israel occupied part of the south of the country for 15 years, and waste collection came to a halt in her village, Arabsalim.

As the years went by, it piled up, and Mokalled went to the regional governor to ask for help.

"Why do you care? We are not Paris," he told her. Full story...

Facebook wants to SPY on you through your webcam or phone: Creepy patent reveals footage collected would be used to tailor material but critics warn it is an 'ethical minefield"

A patent filed by Facebook has been discovered, which suggests that the firm wants to spy on its users through their phone or computer cameras.

The creepy patent reveals that the footage collected would be used to analyse your emotions while you browse the site, tailoring material to how you're feeling.

While it is unclear whether Facebook plans to implement the technology, experts are describing it as an 'ethical minefield.'

The patent, called 'Techniques for emotion detection and content delivery' was discovered by CB Insights, a market intelligence firm based in New York.

In a post about the patent, a spokesperson for CB Insights said: 'On the one hand, they want to identify which content is most engaging and respond to audience's reactions, on the other emotion-detection is technically difficult, not to mention a PR and ethical minefield.' Full story...
