Rodrigo Duterte, 'the punisher', sworn in as Philippines' president...

Rodrigo Duterte, the controversial former mayor of Davao City,
has been sworn in as President of the Philippines in the wake of his landslide victory in May.

Mr Duterte, who was mayor of the city once described as the “Murder capital” of the Philippines, fought the election promising to crack down on government corruption, as well as taking a hard line on crime, including a pledge to reintroduce the death penalty.

Known as “the Punisher” and “Duterte Harry”, the 71-year-old shunned the traditional public inauguration and rally, instead opting to be sworn-in in front of an audience of 600 guests in the Malacanang Palace in Manila.

Only state media were permitted to attend the event, following outrage after Mr Duterte said that “just because you’re a journalist you are not exempted from assassination if you’re a son of a bitch”.

In his inauguration address, Mr Duterte spoke of his desire to curb “the erosion of the people’s trust” as well as restating his pledge that "the fight [on crime] will be relentless and it will be sustained". Full story...
