Indian pupils should not be taught in English as they will fail to learn humanitarian and patriotic values, the leader of the country’s most prominent Hindu nationalist group has said.
Mohan Bhagwat, head of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) which has close links to Nahendra Modi, the Indian prime minister, said that teaching pupils to serve their country was more important than the career opportunities that come with an English education.
“English education can only train us enough to be able to earn our daily bread,” said Mr Bhagwat. “We don’t need such schools, but those that teach us to serve the betterment of other human beings.”
