What’s more powerful than porn?

Not only did the release of a post-apocalyptic video game cause a drop in porn traffic, it also earned over $750m in 24 hours. Eat your heart out, Hollywood

The highest opening day gross for a movie ever is $91,071,119. The movie was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, part II, in 2011 and the numbers made the front pages of newspapers around the world. But it came as no surprise.

The movie was the final installment of a beloved series, and cinema halls were packed with Potter-maniacs. On November 10 this year, the fact that another entertainment property made an estimated $750 million on the first day of its release seems to have escaped notice, except in the gaming community. And that community didn't care about those numbers either. They were busy downloading — in their millions — copies of Fallout 4. Movies grab headlines, but when it comes to sheer numbers, the gaming industry pulled ahead a long time ago. Earlier this month, the latest installment in the Call of Duty game franchise, Black Ops 3, made $550 million on its first day. To put things in perspective, that's 263% higher than the opening weekend take of this year's biggest grossing movie so far, Jurassic World. And while Call of Duty may be a name familiar to non-gamers, it pales in comparison to Fallout.

On November 10, PornHub announced a 10% decline in traffic, conjecturing that the sudden drop in interest was due to the release of Fallout 4. According to popular gaming site Steam, at one point, there were 4,50,000 people playing the game concurrently, a record. Full story...
