William Hague's rape summit cost taxpayers £5.2 MILLION but 'has achieved nothing'

At last summer's End Sexual Violence in Conflict conference, co-headed by Angelia Jolie, the former foreign secretary pledged to help "end one of the greatest injustices of our time".

The pair promised justice for the hundreds of victims of rape in the war-torn Congo – but no one has yet been prosecuted, and rates of sexual violence in the region have increased.

Tamah Murfet, of the International Rescue Committee's women's protection unit in the Congo, said: "Funding is very low for tackling sexual violence – across the board it has decreased.

"Major donors have dropped out of this area and it's become very difficult to even get minimal coverage."

The total cost of the lavish four-day summit – £5.2million – was five times greater than the Foreign Office's budget to directly tackle sexual violence in war zones this year.

A staggering £576,000 was spent on hotels and transport for delegates at the summit, while the food bill came to £299,000. Full story...
