Bollywood star Salman Khan freed after sentence suspended for street sleeper death...

A leading Bollywood star jailed earlier this week for the death of a street sleeper in a drunken hit and run crash was told he could go free on Friday pending an appeal.

Salman Khan, one of India's most popular action film heroes, killed 38-year-old Noor Ullah Khan, who was sleeping on the pavement by a Mumbai bakery when he lost control of his SUV car and mounted the kerb. Three others suffered serious injuries in the crash and the actor fled the scene in 2002.

He had been drinking cocktails that evening and was described as very drunk. The court earlier this week found him guilty of culpable homicide and driving while under the influence of alcohol.

He was sentenced to five years in jail but freed on Friday after a court suspended his sentence. The ruling was welcomed with relief in Bollywood where studios stood to lose £20 million if he had not been able to complete his current filming commitments. Full story...
