Pepsi dumps controversial aspartame sweetener from diet drink - but only in America...

Pepsi is ditching a controversial sweetener from its diet drink in a bid to address falling sales.

The soft drink giant has announced that it is removing aspartame from Diet Pepsi and instead is using a different component.

The company will use sucralose and acesulfame potassium (ace-K) instead of aspartame as sweeteners for the drink - but only in the United States.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the company will still use the component in Europe, while it will also remain in other drinks the company has in the US.

Last year, Diet Pepsi volume was down 5.2 per cent, while Diet Coke was down 6.6 per cent.

Despite the move, health experts are still warning people to be wary of the new sweeteners - which, it is claimed, might have links to cancer.
