An Indian court has sentenced seventeen policemen to life in prison for killing a 22-year-old jobseeker who was held in custody in the Uttarakhand State capital of Dehradun, lawyers say.

The Indian court issued the verdicts on Monday after convicting the officers of kidnapping and killing Ranbir Singh in 2009.

Earlier on Friday, a New Delhi court had convicted the officers of carrying out crimes against Singh when he was looking for a job in the northern city of Dehradun.

The court also convicted the officers of entering into a criminal conspiracy to kill Singh.

“The investigation showed his body had 29 bullet wounds and bore torture marks,” AT Rao, the lawyer representing the student's family said.

India’s Central Bureau of Investigation had said its probe showed that the student was gunned down by police near Dehradun at point blank range. Full story...
