Dalit women in Tamil Nadu narrate tales of atrocities...

Dalit women who bore the brunt of atrocities narrated their plight at a public hearing held in Madurai on Saturday. At the meet organised by NGO Evidence, many women broke down while pouring their hearts out before a panel of jurists.

The event named 'Dalit Women Speak Out' aimed to provide legal redress to the affected women. In fact, some of the atrocities mentioned by the participants were shocking.

A woman from Cuddalore said her 12-year-old daughter, who was working as a servant for a lawyer couple in Aluva in Kerala, died after torture. There were visible cigarette burns and cuts all over the girl's body. She told her mother that she was made to sleep in a kennel before she died on February 24, 2011. A case was booked against the employers but no charge sheet has been filed so far, the mother said.

Sexual abuse of dalit girls is rampant. Seven-year-old Kanni (name changed) was abducted and raped by two non-dalits in Kaveripatti village in Salem. Her mother saw them carrying her off on a two-wheeler, but their entire community couldn't prevent the crime. The 40 dalits in the village are no match to non-dalits belonging to 400 families. Medical examination confirmed sexual assault, but police claimed the mother tried to close the case as abduction for reasons well known to her. Full story...
