An innocent-looking teenage girl was passing out fliers to passers-by on a recent day in Tokyo's Akihabara district, known as a magnet for the "otaku" (geek) culture, with its numerous maid cafes and electronics shops.
"I'll show you around," the teen suggested. "Why don't we go on a date together?"
She explained that a "stroll" together would cost depending on the time she spent with her customer: 5,000 yen ($51) for 30 minutes, 8,000 yen for 60 minutes and 12,000 yen for 100 minutes. Her flier carried the disclaimer: "We are not a sex industry shop."
The 17-year-old is one of the increasing number of schoolgirls who stand on streets soliciting paid dates, called "JK osampo (strolls)." JK stands for "joshi kosei," which means high school girl in Japanese.
Centered on the Akihabara district, the JK strolls represent a new business model that is quickly replacing "JK rifure," or "refreshment" or "reflexology" services provided by high school girls, which are coming under an intensifying police crackdown. Full story...
