Report: TSA employee misconduct up 26% in 3 years...

Let's get this out of the way straight off: The Transportation Security Administration is probably not going to top anyone's list of Favorite Federal Government Agencies.

And the stories of its failures spread faster than a speeding jetliner: TSA officers stealing money from luggage, taking bribes from drug dealers, sleeping on the job.

So it shouldn't come as any surprise that a new Government Accountability Office report, citing a 26% increase in misconduct among TSA employees between 2010 and 2012, is striking a nerve with some travelers who've had to endure the shoeless, beltless shuffle on the trip through security.

"Whenever you get an organization that has to be there, sometimes it just starts to take on a weight of its own," traveler Chris Simon said Wednesday at San Francisco International Airport. "So maybe it's just not being managed."

"This makes me never want to check my bag," Twitter user KathrynPowers1 posted Wednesday in response to the news. Full story...

No, I'm not on Twitter. Is that a problem?

Only 16 per cent of people in the UK are on Twitter, yet I am asked at least once a week – by journalists, publicists and occasionally actual people – why I’m not among them. The default setting of Twitter users is to assume that there’s no reason why anyone wouldn’t be on Twitter. But as Stella Creasy and Caroline Criado-Perez have shown this week, there are some excellent reasons to avoid it like the snake pit it can be.

As an MP, Creasy probably has to be on Twitter. It’s the way politics now works: as membership of political parties disintegrates, it’s one way to raise your profile, especially among younger voters. But that accessibility is precisely what enables crazy people to contact her directly, threatening her with rape, murder, and various combinations of the two. Criado-Perez also operates in a political sphere: she’s a campaigner and runs a website. This is what Twitter is good for: raising awareness, driving net traffic. But the price she had to pay for that was receiving 50 rape threats in an hour.

Even if you’re not working in politics but merely offering an opinion in a public place, you can be on the receiving end of this kind of aggression. Mary Beard remains a devoted tweeter, in spite of receiving abuse after an appearance on Question Time which included the odd death threat. Frankly, I can do without that level of harassment in my life. If this changes, I’ll get the night bus one evening (which I’m confident can provide me with similar charmless behaviour from people I don’t know). Full story...

Australia’s election campaign is driven by a barbarism that dares not speak its name...

The election campaign in Australia is being fought with the lives of men, women and children. Some drown, others are banished without hope to malarial camps. Children are incarcerated behind razor wire in conditions described as "a huge generator of mental illness". This barbarism is considered a vote-winner by both the Australian government and opposition. Reminiscent of the closing of borders to Jews in the 1930s, it is smashing the façade of a society advertised as benign and lucky.

If a thousand Australians drowned in sinking boats in Sydney Harbour, the prime minister would lead the nation in mourning; the world would offer condolences. By one measure, 1376 refugees have drowned trying to reach Australia since 1998, many within range of rescue.

The policy in Canberra, known as "stop the boats", evokes the hysteria and cynicism of more than a century ago when the "yellow peril" was said to be falling down on Australia as if by the force of gravity. Last week, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd reached back to this era when he declared that no refugees in boats would be permitted to land in Australia. Instead, they are to be sent to concentration camps in impoverished Papua New Guinea, whose government has been suitably bribed.

Among them are people fleeing wars and their aftermath for which Australia and its US mentor bear responsibility. Those who survive are made prisoners in a harsh gulag on the most isolated islands on earth. Women and children sent to equatorial Manus Island already have had to be evacuated because of mosquito-infested conditions. Now Manus is to receive 3,000 more refugees who, denied legal rights, may spend years there. A former security guard on the island said, "[It's] worse than a prison actually... Words can't really describe ... I have never seen human beings so destitute, so helpless and so hopeless... In Australia, the facility couldn't serve as a dog kennel. Its owners would be jailed." US government spending $500k to push HPV vaccine that keeps killing young women...

Amid all the budget cuts and sequestration measures being taken by the federal government these days, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has somehow procured more than half a million taxpayer dollars to spend on pushing more people to get vaccinated for human papillomavirus (HPV). As reported by CNSNews.com, NIH recently awarded $544,188 to the University of California (UC) school system to research new propaganda tactics that may help sway more mothers to have their underage daughters vaccinated with Merck & Co.'s Gardasil jab.

Even though countless thousands of young girls around the world have been seriously injured or killed as a result of being poked with Gardasil, according to the latest available statistics, NIH is concerned that not enough young girls in California's Los Angeles County are getting the shot -- the vaccine industry is presumably concerned as well. So, the federal agency has tasked UC with evaluating new methods that might convince more mothers of underage girls to have their daughters vaccinated, all on the taxpayer's dime.

According to the study, entitled Increasing HPV Vaccine Uptake in a Low Income Ethnic Minority Population, when mothers of so-called "age-eligible" girls between the ages of 11 and 18 call the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) for information about anything, operators will be instructed to engage in an "intervention," during which time they will explain to the mothers how and where to get the vaccine. These same mothers will be told about the "benefits" of being jabbed for HPV. Full story...

FBI child-pimp raid ignores pedophile elite...

The FBI announced Monday that it has arrested 150 people suspected of child sex trafficking.

Unfortunately, those arrested appear to be low-level operators - not the well-connected kingpins who pander children to the wealthiest and most powerful Americans. Elite pedophile networks connected to elements of the CIA, including the “Finders of Lost Children” and the Franklin Scandal group, have operated shamelessly and without fear of prosecution for decades. They have even peddled young prostitutes during midnight tours of the White House.

On June 29th, 1989, the Washington Times published a breakthrough story headlined: “Homosexual prostitution inquiry ensnares VIPs with Reagan, Bush: ‘Call boys’ took midnight tour of White House.’”

The story began: “A homosexual prostitution ring is under investigation by federal and District authorities and includes among its clients key officials of the Reagan and Bush administrations, military officers, congressional aides and US and foreign businessmen with close social ties to Washington’s political elite, documents obtained by The Washington Times reveal. One of the ring’s high-profile clients was so well-connected, in fact, that he could arrange a middle-of-the-night tour of the White House for his friends on Sunday, July 3, of last year. Among the six persons on the extraordinary 1 a.m. tour were two male prostitutes.” Full story...

Bradley Manning acquitted of aiding the enemy but guilty of espionage violations...

A military judge acquitted Army Pfc. Bradley Manning on Tuesday of aiding the enemy, but convicted him of violations of the Espionage Act for turning over a trove of classified data to the website WikiLeaks, in a case where the soldier has been portrayed variously as a traitor and as a whistle-blower.

The verdict by the judge, Col. Denise Lind, dismissed the prosecution's argument that Manning released documents -- in the largest leak of classified information in U.S. history -- that he knew would end up in the hands of al Qaeda. The verdict also found Manning not guilty of unauthorized possession of information relating to national defense.

If he had been found guilty of aiding the enemy, he would have faced life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Manning still faces the prospect of years, if not decades, behind bars. He was found guilty on 20 counts. The sentencing phase of the court-martial begins Wednesday, and Manning faces up to a maximum 136 years in prison. Full story...

India coalition approves new state of Telangana...

India's ruling Congress-led coalition has unanimously agreed to the formation of a new state in the Telangana region of southern Andhra Pradesh state, officials say.

With a population of 40 million, the proposed state comprises 10 of Andhra Pradesh's 23 districts including Hyderabad, India's sixth biggest city.

The state has seen protests for and against the proposal in recent years.

Backers of the new state say the area has been neglected by the government.

"It wasn't an easy decision but now everyone has been heard and a decision has been taken," senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh told Indian media.

Opponents of the move are unhappy that Hyderabad, home to many major information technology and pharmaceutical companies, could become Telangana's new capital. Full story...

In Sri Lanka, will mass grave case be buried?

On November 24 last year, workers digging a trench in the compound of Matale hospital, central Sri Lanka, made a gruesome discovery. Using a backhoeing machine ahead of plans to build foundations for a new bio-gas unit behind a kitchen, workers began to unearth what appeared to be human remains.

Forensic excavation over the next three months confirmed at least 154 human skeletons, the largest mass grave discovered in Sri Lanka, where more than three decades of civil war ended with the defeat of the rebel Tamil Tigers in 2009. Preliminary forensic reports submitted to Matale court earlier this year paint a picture of torture and killings. Some bones showed evidence of nails hammered in before death and one leg bone was tied with a carefully knotted metal wire.

“There are several skulls that remain devoid of their skeletons,” a sign of decapitations, reads one of the forensic reports. Evidence also points to the use of firearms and blunt instruments before death.

For President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his powerful family, the ongoing investigation into what happened in Matale has turned into a ticking political and judicial time bomb. Not only has the case subjected the president’s questionable rights record to embarrassing scrutiny, it has also implicated his brother, Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, in serious abuses perpetrated against the country’s Sinhalese majority, the source of political support for both men following their victorious ending of the civil war four years ago. Low cost iPhone leading to worker abuse in Apple factories in China...

A human-rights watchdog group may have inadvertently confirmed one of the biggest Apple rumors of the year. China Labor Watch, a nonprofit based in New York, released a 62-page report detailing safety violations, poor living conditions, forced overtime, and the withholding of pay – but they also came across workers who were involved in the production of a low-cost iPhone.

The report, titled Apple’s unkept promises: Cheap iPhones come at high costs to Chinese workers, centered on factories operated by Pegatron, a Taiwan-owned suppler with factories in Shanghai. Investigators were sent to three Pegatron factories, conducting nearly 200 interviews with staff.

Pegatron has expanded its workforce as Apple shifts some production away from its most infamous suppler, Foxconn. The Wall Street Journal reported that one-third of the world’s iPhones and iPads are assembled at Pegatron.

One section of the China Labor Watch report, “A day in Pegatron,” is written in the style of a diary entry by one of the factory’s staff. The unnamed assembly-line worker describes living in a cramped dormitory with between 10 and 12 people per room, unpaid morning meetings, and military-style discipline from superiors. The worker goes on to explain that talking during work results in docked pay and details how workers who finish their quota before the end of their shift are forced to remain on-site and read the company’s Standard Operating Procedures handbook. Nobody wants to help us because we are dalits: acid attack survivor Chanchal Kumari...

It is never easy for a dalit girl in Bihar to dream big. Caste roles remain well defined in our state and it’s not often someone breaks free from the mould.

Yet, I dreamt of becoming a computer engineer. I was encouraged to pursue my dream by my father, Sailesh Paswan. A daily wage construction worker who barely earns enough to make the ends meet for our family of four, he wanted me — the elder of his two daughters — to be one up on all the boys of our community.

So, unmindful of his meagre earnings, my father did the seemingly impossible: he put me in a Plus-2 college and was making me undergo coaching at Danapur, near Patna, to take the engineering entrance examination.

Life was never easy but the hope of a rewarding future kept me going. Trips from my native Chitnawan village, under Maner police station of Patna district, to my college and coaching institute in Danapur were endless.

But I thought nothing of my daily grind that the 22-km trip entailed.

Then, late in the night of October 21, 2012, my whole world came crashing around me. Full story...

Bitcoins banned in Thailand...

Thailand has become the first country to ban bitcoins after the central bank ruled it is not a currency.

In a statement on its website, Bitcoin Company Limited said it had given a presentation to the Bank of Thailand about how the currency works in a bid to operate in the country.

However, at the end of the meeting, "senior members of the Foreign Exchange Administration and Policy Department advised that due to lack of existing applicable laws, capital controls and the fact that Bitcoin straddles multiple financial facets... Bitcoin activities are illegal in Thailand".

The ruling means it is illegal to buy and sell bitcoins, buy or sell any goods or services in exchange for bitcoins, send any bitcoins to anyone outside of Thailand, or receive bitcoins from anyone outside the country. Full story...

SWAT officers dragged 10-year-old from bathtub, made him stand naked next to 4-year-old sister, terrorized family...

Pittsburgh SWAT officers must face claims that they raided a family's home, violently dragged a child from the bathtub, and "terrorized" them at gunpoint, a federal judge ruled.

Georgeia Moreno and her family sued Pittsburgh, its police chief and 14 police officers in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.

The events unfolded as Georgeia, her husband, William; and her stepfather, Mark Staymates were watching television in their living room as Georgia's sick mother, Darlene, slept upstairs at 7 p.m. on Dec. 7, 2010.

They suddenly heard a loud explosion and saw bright lights, "as if grenades were going off," the complaint states.

Pittsburgh Police SWAT officers wearing helmets and facemasks then broke and "stormed through" the front and back doors of the home, according to the complaint.

Those officers allegedly never identified themselves, pointed assault rifles at the family, shouted obscenities and destroyed their property.

Although the team purportedly sought to arrest William for quarreling with a drunk, off-duty police officer at a local veterans club early that morning, the family says that their "terrorization" continued for another 45 minutes after William was apprehended. Full story...

Obama Vineyard vacation at $7.6m private resort; more than 75 rooms booked for staff...

The Massachusetts island of Martha's Vineyard, the exclusive playground for presidents and their families, is about to get its annual summer infusion of cash and attention as President Obama and his family prepare to arrive August 10 for an eight-day vacation.

Local reports indicate that the first family will likely be staying at a $7.6 million resort home on southern edge of the island in the town of Chilmark where homes feature water access to Chilmark Pond, tennis courts and swimming pools.

Staying at the home of Chicago corporate finance manager David Schulte is a break from past Obama vacations because the $21 million home they've rented, Blue Heron Farm, isn't available. Schulte's summer home sits on nine and a half acres, has ocean views and a basketball court.

(...)

While the president typically keeps to himself and carries with him only a handful of staffers to Martha's Vineyard, security will be tight. As in the past, the Wesley Hotel in Oak Bluffs will house security and communications officials. The owner told the Vineyard Gazette that the Secret Service has booked 70 rooms and another five have been reserved for the Transportation Security Agency. Rates at the hotel run from $225-$345.

Also, telephone and communications lines are being installed on the island for the president's use. Full story...

Is 'Fifty Shades of Grey' to blame for rise in handcuff emergencies?

The bestselling erotic novel "Fifty Shades of Grey" may have done more than spice up readers' love lives.

Firefighters in London say it could be to blame for a rise in the emergency calls from people stuck in all kinds of awkward situations -- some involving handcuffs.

The wildly-popular trilogy details the S&M-flavored love story of a recent college grad and a billionaire CEO. It's also credited with boosting sales of sex toys, driving women to hook-up sites and fueling a craze over sexual domination.

So, it's not surprising there would be a downside.

In the past three years, London's fire crews have been called to 79 incidents involving people trapped in handcuffs.

"I don't know whether it's the Fifty Shades effect, but the number of incidents involving items like handcuffs seems to have gone up," said Third Officer Dave Brown. Full story...

Bo Xilai 'blocked investigation into Neil Heywood death'

The disgraced Chinese politician Bo Xilai will be charged with deliberately blocking investigations into the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood, according to reports.

Mr Bo, who was the powerful party chief of Chongqing, is expected to go on trial for corruption, embezzlement and abuse of power in the coming weeks.

The once high-flying politician was toppled last March in the wake of Neil Heywood's mysterious death inside a Chongqing hotel room, a crime that was later attributed to Mr Bo's wife, Gu Kailai.

On Tuesday, amid increasing speculation about the start date of the long-awaited trial, the Chinese business magazine Caijing shed further light on the charges that Mr Bo is likely to face.

It claimed Mr Bo would be accused of "preventing" his former police chief, Wang Lijun, from investigating Mr Heywood's death and unlawfully relieving Mr Wang of his duties. Full story...

Norway mass-killer Anders Breivik applies to study political science at Oslo University...

Norway killer Anders Behring Breivik has applied to study politics at the University of Oslo, triggering fevered debate among university staff, who look likely to be forced to accept him.

During his trial last year, friends of the far-Right extremist pointed to his decision to drop out of high school before graduating, despite higher than average grades, as a key turning point in his pathway to extremism.

Knut Bjarkeid, the director at Ila Prison, where Breivik is serving a 21-year sentence, said he would encourage such a move.

"The prison will always try to pave the way for inmates to get a formal education, so that they are able to get a job when they come out," he told Norway's TV 2 channel.

However, several members of teaching staff at the department of Political Science, who wished to remain anonymous, told the channel that they would refuse to teach the far-Right extremist. Full story...

Saudi Arabia sentences secular activist to 600 lashes, seven years prison...

A Saudi court sentenced on Monday a rights activist to seven years in jail and 600 lashes for setting up a "liberal" network and alleged insults to Islam, activists said.

"Raef Badawi has been sentenced to seven years in jail and 600 lashes," lawyer Waleed Abualkhair wrote on his Twitter account, adding that the judge ordered the closure of the website of the Saudi Liberal Network.

He said Badawi, a co-founder of the Saudi Liberal Network, was charged with criticizing the religious police, as well as calling for "religious liberalization."

A judge had referred Badawi in December to a higher court for alleged apostasy, a charge that could lead to the death penalty in the medieval, US-backed kingdom.

(...)

Badawi, 35, was arrested in June last year in the Red Sea city of Jeddah for unknown reasons.

The network that he co-founded with female rights activist Suad al-Shammari, had announced May 7, 2012 a "day of liberalism" in the Muslim kingdom, calling for an end to the influence of religion on public life in Saudi Arabia. Full story...

Alien power plant found on the moon?

An alien power plant was located in one of the photos of our moon, taken by the Apollo 16 lunar mission, as reported by UFO Sightings Daily. The photo was taken on 21 April, 1972. The report was posted on 21 July, 2013. The website, UFO Sightings Daily, is coordinated by Scott C. Waring. He had been affiliated with the United States Air Force at SAC base (USAF flight line). He currently owns an ESL School in Taiwan.

In this report, Scott Waring has published the original Apollo 16 image, along with a YouTube video.

Mr. Waring describes what we can see in the image.

“Image clearly shows, in detail, a structure that in my opinion looks like a power plant of some kind. Whatever the object is, it seems to be generating or attracting a plume of pure energy.”

He says that it could also be an alien ship which was re-fueling.

“It could of course be an Alien ship of some kind re-fueling, drawing energy from the platform.” Full story...

Nigerian accuses US of inserting tracking device in his anus...

A Nigerian, Jacob Ajomale, who alleged that he was maltreated by the United States' Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ICE, officers, by forcefully inserting a tracking device (chip) in his body through his anus, has petitioned the United Nations Council on Human Rights over alleged inhuman treatment meted to him.

Ajomale through his lawyer, Mr Femi Falana, SAN, claimed that the chip was inserted in him in December 2010.

Falana in the petition to the UN, is urging the world body to direct the United States to remove the tracking device from Ajomale's body with immediate effect.

(...)

Ajomale had averred in an affidavit that he has been living in the United States since April 12, 1997 with a visiting visa and became a permanent resident in February 2008, and never had any criminal record all through the period.

According to him, on January 22, 2009, he travelled to Nigeria for his father's burial and on his way back, he was arrested on February 5, 2009 by one officer, Derrick, at the BWI Airport in Baltimore, Maryland, kept in a cold room for nine hours, where he was tortured in order to make an incriminating statement of using falsified passport in 2001. French deemed 'too lazy' for Swiss recruiters...

Swiss recruitment firms are shunning French candidates because they are deemed "too lazy" and "arrogant" and have a penchant for ringing in sick on Mondays and Fridays, according to reports in a Swiss newspaper this week.

The French have come under the cosh for their work ethic in recent months. In February outspoken American CEO, Maurice Taylor accused French factory workers of spending most of their time at work talking and now it is the turn of the Swiss to cast aspersions on how hard the French work.

This week a Swiss paper provoked headlines and more soul searching in France by claiming recruitment firms in the country are shunning the French because they are perceived to be too “lazy and arrogant”.

Le Matin Dimanche reported that Swiss recruitment firms are including the requirement “Swiss or resident in Switzerland” in job adverts to avoid being inundated by French applicants.

Recruitment agencies interviewed by the newspaper say they include the condition in order to meet with the desires of their clients, who have a less than flattering view of the French.

The newspaper quotes the head of recruitment at a medium sized construction firm, who complains that the French staff are often ill on Mondays or Fridays and they have a "vengeful" attitude. Full story...

India: harassment and delaying tactics increasing after Orissa Mining court decision...

The Dongria Khondh indigenous community of Orissa, in eastern India is still in danger of losing their ancestral land and the mountain that is sacred to them in spite of the Indian Supreme Court ruling in April.

The ruling gave village councils the final decision on the plans for the bauxite mine. But the Orissa state government, appears to delaying holding the village councils and trying to prevent all villages from being consulted.

There have been reports that village leaders are facing increased harassment by state police and several have been arrested and the pressure will undoubtedly increase in the next few months.

The mining project is to be jointly operated by Orissa Mining Corporation and a subsidiary of the UK-registered Vedanta Resources. The Orissa government own the Orissa Mining Corporation, which may explains their attitude to the consultation process. Anil Agarwal, an Indian billionaire who lives in London, owns most of Vedanta. The Vedanta shareholders’ meeting is to be held in London on 2nd August. This may be a good opportunity to draw shareholders attention to the issues. Full story...

'1984 is now!': Germans protest Berlin's role in NSA spying ...

Lawlessness is the new normal...

There is no doubt that this is true, but the sovereignty of the EU member states is only nominal. Although the individual countries still retain some sovereignty from the EU government, they are all under Washington’s thumb, as demonstrated by the recent illegal and hostile action taken on Washington’s orders by France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Austria against the airliner carrying Bolivia’s President Evo Morales.

Flying back to Bolivia from Moscow, Morales’ plane was denied overflight and refueling permission by Washington’s French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese puppets and had to land in Austria, where the presidential plane was searched for Edward Snowden. It was a power play by Washington to kidnap Snowden from Bolivia’s presidential airliner in defiance of international law and to teach upstart reformers like Morales that independence from Washington’s orders is not permitted.

The European puppet states went along with this extraordinary breach of diplomacy and international law despite the fact that each of the countries is incensed that Washington is spying on their governments, diplomats, and citizens. Their thanks to Snowden, whose revelations made them aware that Washington was recording their every communication, was to help Washington capture Snowden.

This tells us how much morality, honor, integrity there is left in Western civilization: Zero. Full story...

Indonesian nazi cafe sparks web hate blitzkrieg...

An Indonesian businessman has become the target of a hate campaign by web users over his Nazi-themed café - which is covered in the iconography of Adolf Hitler's regime.

Soldeatenkaffee - meaning Soldier's Café in German - is painted blood red and its walls are plastered with Nazi-era propaganda posters, created by Josef Goebbels to spread Nazi values.

Diners wear full Nazi costume to the café in Bandung, west Java, and pick a meal from a menu using Nazi symbols. Options include German nachos and currywurst.

Owner Henry Mulyana said trade has been brisk since opening in 2011, including positive reviews in local media. But all that has changed in the past few days.

The future of Soldeatenkaffee now lies in doubt amid accusations that it incites racial hatred. Full story...

What it means to starve for freedom in Guantanamo...

(...)

In our unwelcome base of Guantanamo, we are now confronted with an obvious mistake and terrible situation. The American hysteria of terrorism and our war machine has given us a collection of prisoners of an undeclared war. They now confront our basic values and ethics. We have again fallen into our history of racism and religious intolerance by indefinitely impounding a class of people.

Today our ethics and human rights morals are being affronted and tarnished by the collective action and inaction of our politicians and our nation's indifference. That is why activists gather to display signs, names of prisoners, prison garb, solitary and cage imprisonment conditions and demonstrate the brutal tube feeding of prisoners at Guantanamo. The demonstrators point out at the White House, and at many sites across our nation, the tragedy of the situation wherein the militarist, and macho and fear-centered culture of this nation are persistently subverting our American standards of justice and the international laws of nations. Our injustice and obstinacy, especially of some members of our Congress, is continuing to build and reap the enmity of most of the people of our world.

At this moment of American history, we must promptly correct a terrible situation in our government and the Guantanamo prison.

Since the aftermath of the 9/11 disaster, we have sometimes openly, and sometimes secretly, engaged an extensive series of illegal procedures. In addition to an Orwellian state of surveillance of ourselves, we have resulted in torturous detentions in various obscure places and Guantanamo. Now we face the exquisite ethical dilemma of prisoners opting for starvation as their protest or freedom to death. Full story...

Courts quietly confirm MMR vaccine causes autism...

After decades of passionate debate, parents probably missed the repeated admissions by drug companies and governments alike that vaccines do in fact cause autism. For concerned parents seeking the truth, it’s worth remembering that the exact same people who own the world’s drug companies also own America’s news outlets. Finding propaganda-free information has been difficult, until now.

At the center of the fifteen-year controversy is Dr. Andrew Wakefield of Austin, Texas. It was Dr. Wakefield that first publicized the link between stomach disorders and autism, and taking the findings one step further, the link between stomach disorders, autism and the Measles Mumps Rubella (MMR) vaccine.

For that discovery way back in 1996, and a subsequent research paper published by the doctor in 1998, Andrew Wakefield has found himself the victim of a world-wide smear campaign by drug corporations, governments and media companies. And while Dr. Wakefield has been persecuted and prosecuted to the extent of being unable to legally practice medicine because of his discovery, he has instead become a best-selling author, the founder of the Strategic Autism Initiative, and the Director of the Autism Media Channel.

But in recent months, courts, governments and vaccine manufacturers have quietly conceded the fact that the Measles Mumps Rubella (MMR) vaccine most likely does cause autism and stomach diseases. Pharmaceutical companies have even gone so far as to pay out massive monetary awards, totaling in the millions, to the victims in an attempt to compensate them for damages and to buy their silence. Letter to Obama from Edward Snowden's father...

July 26, 2013
President Barack Obama
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20500

Re: Civil Disobedience, Edward J. Snowden, and the Constitution

Dear Mr. President:

You are acutely aware that the history of liberty is a history of civil disobedience to unjust laws or practices. As Edmund Burke sermonized, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”

Civil disobedience is not the first, but the last option. Henry David Thoreau wrote with profound restraint in Civil Disobedience: “If the injustice is part of the necessary friction of the machine of government, let it go, let it go: perchance it will wear smooth certainly the machine will wear out. If the injustice has a spring, or a pulley, or a rope, or a crank, exclusively for itself, then perhaps you may consider whether the remedy will not be worse than the evil; but if it is of such a nature that it requires you to be the agent of injustice to another, then, I say, break the law. Let your life be a counter friction to stop the machine.”

Thoreau’s moral philosophy found expression during the Nuremburg trials in which “following orders” was rejected as a defense. Indeed, military law requires disobedience to clearly illegal orders.

A dark chapter in America’s World War II history would not have been written if the then United States Attorney General had resigned rather than participate in racist concentration camps imprisoning 120,000 Japanese American citizens and resident aliens. Full story...

Ji Yingnan and other jilted mistresses expose Chinese officials’ corruption...

As President Xi Jinping pledges to clean up government corruption in China, an unlikely group of self-styled whistleblowers has emerged: jilted mistresses.

The latest is a 26-year-old named Ji Yingnan, who says she discovered at the end of last year that her fiance, a powerful Communist Party official in Beijing, had been married with a teenage son the entire time they were together.

In recent weeks, Ji has released hundreds of photos online that offer a rare window into the life of a Chinese central government official who — despite his modest salary — was apparently able to lavish his mistress with luxury cars, go on shopping sprees at Prada and tuck more than $1,000 in cash into Ji’s purse every day when they first met.

“I never imagined that the one I loved so much, the one I gave so much love to, the one who lived four years with me, would become my enemy one day,” said Ji on a recent evening at a KFC near her apartment, where she says she stays holed up for days at a time. Full story...

Saudi prince defects from royal family...

Prince Khalid Bin Farhan Al-Saud has announced his defection from Al Saud royal family through a statement, calling on other princes to break their silence and reveal the truth for sake of God.

In his statement on Saturday, the Saudi prince referred to his ‘sufferings’ under reign of Al Saud regime describing them as bitter experiences that will be revealed by the Saudi twitter writer Mujtahid and Saudi activist Saad al-Faqih, who is currently living in London.

He said he thanked God that helped him understand the truth about Saudi regime through a “direct horrible personal experience” so that he could have a taste of what people suffered from throughout the country.

“With pride, I announce my defection from Al Saudi family in Saudi Arabia,” he wrote in his statement.

“This regime in Saudi Arabia does not stand by God’s rules or even (country’s) established rules and its policies, decisions, and actions are totally based on personal will of its leaders.” Full story...

Malaysia: From beauty pageant to politics...

The Chinese community is of late engrossed with the developments on the sex bloggers and eating at school changing room while in the Malay society, it's the beauty pageant involving four Muslim women.

These four young ladies were all hailing from Eurasian families, partly Malay and partly western lineages. Perhaps because of that these four ladies are relatively more open-minded than their peers.

They took part in Miss World Malaysia pageant, and all of them made it to the final 20.

The question is, Malaysia has had a fatwa banning Muslim women from taking part in beauty contests as early as the 1990s.

In Malaysia, a fatwa is a kind of decision or verdict by a mufti enjoying official status on whether certain behaviors are in compliance with the Islamic teachings, and the same verdict is legally binding.

These four young ladies' behaviour was seen as contravening the religious fatwa, and they could face jail sentence once convicted in a syariah court. Full story...

Five children in India forced to live in graveyard after parents die of AIDS...

Five siblings have been found living in a graveyard in India, after their parents died of AIDS.

The children, who are between seven and 17 years old, are from a village called Jamuna, in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The village lies 160km west of the state capital of Lucknow.

The children were forced to live in the graveyard after being chased out of their homes by other villagers. It is believe they were abandoned due to the fear of contracting the disease from their deceased parents.

The children's father, Vahizzudin, died a few years ago. Their mother, Ashiyana Bano, followed her husband in June. Tragically, two weeks after her death, the children were evicted.

And with no place to go, the children put up a tent near their parents' graves and survived on handouts from some of the villagers.

"We eat the food given by some villagers but we are not allowed to enter the village. We have also stopped going to the school," one of them said. Full story...

Travel site TripAdvisor under fire over popularity of fake restaurant...

TripAdvisor has come under fire after its fraud detection systems failed to prevent a non-existent business becoming one of the most highly-rated restaurants in a popular seaside town.

Oscar's in Brixham, Devon, first appeared on the website in May, and after receiving a string of glowing reviews climbed above 37 other establishments in the rankings.

It was praised for its “mind-blowing”, “simply divine” “perfect” and “amazing” culinary creations that “bordered on sorcery”, with some even suggesting it ought to be awarded a Michelin star.

The listing for Oscar's remained in place until yesterday, despite the appearance of two reviews posted on July 20 and 23 confirming that it does not actually exist. Only after being contacted by London's Telegraph for a comment was it removed by TripAdvisor.

Chris Emmins, co-founder of the online reputation management firm KwikChex, said the listing cast doubt on TripAdvisor's ability to spot fraudulent reviews.

“The listing featured over-the-top reviews for a fake business, but it went undetected for more than two months” he said. “It's difficult to see how TripAdvisor's system can detect elaborate fraud, if they can't detect one like this.” Full story...

How America's top tech companies created the surveillance state...

`With Edward Snowden on the run in Russia and reportedly threatening to unveil the entire “blueprint” for National Security Agency surveillance, there’s probably as much terror in Silicon Valley as in Washington about what he might expose. The reaction so far from private industry about the part it has played in helping the government spy on Americans has ranged from outraged denial to total silence. Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, he of the teen-nerd hoodie, said he’d never even heard of the kind of data-mining that the NSA leaker described—then fell quiet. Google cofounder Larry Page declared almost exactly the same thing; then he shut up, too. Especially for the libertarian geniuses of Silicon Valley, who take pride in their distance (both physically and philosophically) from Washington, the image-curdling idea that they might be secretly in bed with government spooks induced an even greater reluctance to talk, perhaps, than the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which conveniently forbids executives from revealing government requests for information.

But the sounds of silence from the tech and telecom sectors are drowning out a larger truth, one that some of Snowden’s documents might well supply in much greater detail. For nearly 20 years, many of these companies—indeed most of America’s biggest corporate sectors, from energy to finance to telecom to computers—have been doing the intelligence community’s bidding, as America’s spy and homeland-security agencies have bored their way into the nation’s privately run digital and electronic infrastructure. Sometimes this has happened after initial resistance, and occasionally under penalty of law, but more often with willing and even eager cooperation. Indeed, the private tech sector effectively built the NSA’s surveillance system, and got rich doing it.

Books have been written about President Eisenhower’s famous farewell warning in 1961 about the “military-industrial complex,” and what he described as its “unwarranted influence.” But an even greater leviathan today, one that the public knows little about, is the “intelligence-industrial complex.” Full story...
