Russian convicts beat Americans convicts in cyber chess battle...

A team of Russian convicts have beaten a group of US inmates in a cyber chess battle conducted from their respective prisons, more than 5,000 miles apart.

The 10 players from Russian jails in Astrakhan, Krasnodar, Samara, Saratov and Sverdlovsk regions trounced their 10 opponents from Cook County Jail in Chicago with a score of 14.5 to 5.5.

The tournament, held via the internet and Skype, was the first of its kind.

Russia's team was made up of the country's best chess-playing jailbirds and had heavyweight support from Anatoly Karpov, the Soviet grandmaster and former world champion. The Chicago team was led by their chess teacher Mikhail Korenman, an acquaintance of Mr Karpov.

US media dubbed the international clash "jailhouse rook" and broadcast footage of the American lags hunched over their laptops in a prison library. Full story...
