American hermit turns down marriage and bail offers...

A man who lived as a hermit for almost three decades, before being arrested this month on theft charges, has received a bizarre marriage proposal and an offer from a stranger to bail him out of jail.

The unsolicited approaches have prompted the authorities in Maine to dramatically increase Christopher Knight's bond, amid fears he could be exploited by unscrupulous characters.

Police he may have been responsible for as many as a thousand burglaries over the years, raiding cottages and campsites for food, cooking gear, sleeping bags, tents and other goods to help him survive.

Knight - known as the North Pond Hermit to locals in Kennebec County - had virtually no contact with other people for 27 years.

 In the short time since his arrest, the 47-year-old has had several requests from people who want to get close to him, officials said. Full story...
