Afghan officials took £2.5 billion in bribes in 2012...

Afghan civil servants and officials pocketed an estimated £2.5 billion ($3.9 billion) in bribes in 2012, or twice what the government earns in tax and customs revenue, a United Nations survey has found.

Money demanded by state employees has risen more than 40 per cent since 2009 according to the study of how graft blights the daily lives of Afghans.

The cost of the corruption which bedevils the country is likely to be far higher because the survey did not look at the huge bribes found at the highest levels of business and politics.

 Corruption is widely blamed for alienating Afghans from the Kabul regime and is seen as a significant force driving people towards the Taliban insurgency. Full story...
