Harlem Désir, an MEP and former anti-racist activist, has been anointed as the next leader of the ruling French Socialists, the first black leader of a mainstream European political party.
The relatively unknown Mr Désir will replace Martine Aubry, a major figure in national politics, who is stepping aside after being snubbed for the post of Prime Minister by Francois Hollande, the French Socialist President.
Mr Désir, 52, was opposed by Ms Aubry and imposed by the French president as a "safe pair hands", a career apparatchik, to snuff out Left-wing opposition by activists angry at a perceived betrayal of the party's Socialist ideals.
A vote next month on Mr Désir's nomination is considered a formality for the job of "first secretary", traditionally a secondary, or backroom, figure now the Socialists are in power to the true leader President Hollande. Full story...
