Manchester Airport thtreatened with boycott if naked scanners are not removed...

Hundreds of people have signed a petition vowing to boycott Manchester Airport unless controversial body scanners are removed.

As families prepare to jet off for summer breaks, a campaign against the so-called ‘naked scanners’ has been launched.

Around 500 people, including a pilot and members of cabin crew, have backed calls for the devices at all three terminals to be axed – and replaced with traditional security machines.

The protest is being led by Steve Clarke, 57, from Audenshaw, Tameside, who believes the low-level x-rays used to show up hidden weapons and explosives could pose a health risk. The guitar repair engineer has not flown from Manchester since his wife Anni, 52, was diagnosed with skin cancer last year.

He remains concerned that the scanner could increase her risk of the illness returning, even though the Health Protection Agency says travellers can safely use it 5,000 times a year. Full story...
