Norwegian alarm system monitors length of office lavatory visits!!!

Call centre workers in Norway are protesting against a hi-tech surveillance system that triggers an alarm if they spend more than eight minutes per day in the lavatory.

Managers are alerted by flashing lights if an employee is away from their desk for a loo break or other "personal activities" beyond the allotted time.

But unions and workplace inspectors have branded the practice at insurance company DNB as "highly intrusive" and a potential breach of their human rights.

Norway's privacy regulator called Datatilsynet has now written to DNB telling them the monitoring system is "a major violation of privacy". Full story...

Saudi Arabia: Christians arrested at private prayer meeting, women undergo genital "search"

Thirty five Ethiopian Christians are awaiting deportation from Saudi Arabia for “illicit mingling,” after police arrested them when they raided a private prayer gathering in Jeddah in mid-December, 2011, Human Rights Watch said today. Of those arrested, 29 were women. They were subjected to arbitrary body cavity searches in custody, three of the Ethiopians told Human Rights Watch.

The Ethiopians gathered to pray together on December 15, during the advent of Christmas, in the private home of one of the Ethiopians, when police burst in and arrested them, three jailed members of the group, two women and one man, told Human Rights Watch.

(...)

The Ethiopian men spent two days at al-Nuzha police station in Jeddah, after which the police transferred them to Buraiman prison. The women had already been transferred to Buraiman prison. Two of the women said that officials there forced the women to strip, and then an officer inserted her finger into each of the women’s genitals, under the pretext of searching for illegal substances hidden inside their bodies. She wore a plastic glove that she did not change, the women told Human Rights Watch. Officers also kicked and beat the men in Buraiman prison, and insulted them as “unbelievers,” the jailed Ethiopian man said. Full story...

350 prisoners caught taunting victims on Facebook...

Violent criminals, including murderers, have been using Facebook to taunt victims and their families from behind bars.

Other prisoners have been maintaining their criminal empires via the social networking site.

Inmates are banned from accessing the internet but manage to get online by using mobile phones smuggled into jails.

In the last two years, nearly 350 have been discovered posting on Facebook. It is likely there are dozens of others using the site without the authorities being aware.

The official figures have raised major concerns about security failures in prisons. Last night victims’ groups said criminals using Facebook were adding ‘insult to injury’. More + photos...

Toddlers subjected to palm-reading assessments in China!!!

Several kindergartens in a province in northern China are charging parents 1,200 yuan ($190) for a palm-reading test that they claim can predict their toddlers’ intelligence and potential, state news agency Xinhua said.

Many parents have flocked to palm readers for the test, used in kindergartens in northern Shanxi province and designed for children above the age of three months, the report said.

According to the company that designed the tests, Shanxi Daomeng Culture Communication Co, the reading of palms helps “determine the children’s innate intelligence and potential”, Xinhua reported. Full story...

Christians slam 'mystic' supermarket campaign in Switzerland...

Swiss Christians have taken issue with a new campaign by supermarket giant Migros that encourages children to awaken strange powers by collecting 48 different magical stones.

While the slogan, “Discover your inner animal”, is considered particularly contentious by Christian critics, the front cover of Migros' customer magazine, which depicts a child’s face roaring like a wild beast, has also received a large number of complaints.

According to critics, the collectible stones that can be worn as amulets around the neck promote esoteric ideas and mysticism.

Christian website Jesus.ch has argued that the use of amulets promotes non-Christian beliefs, in that an amulet represents an intermediary force between humans and higher powers, newspaper Tages Anzeiger reported on Monday. Full story...

Too many deaths in police custody , too little accountability...

In 2010 the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC ) reported that 333 people had died in or following police custody over the previous 11 years. During that time, though, no officer had ever been successfully prosecuted.

The report by the independent police watchdog found that prosecutions were recommended against 13 officers based on ‘relatively strong evidence of misconduct or neglect’, but none had resulted in a guilty verdict.

Len Jackson, the IPCC interim chair, explained this away at the time with the line that ‘juries quite often find it difficult to convict police officers’.

So many deaths and yet so little consequence was explained by the prejudicial nature of juries, in the police’s favour. At the time this seemed a weak argument. Full story...

Free drugs and liquor in Punjab elections!!!

Punjab politicians had the voters literally on a drug high. Not only liquor, the candidates in fray ensured that people get the drug of their choice. The drug menu on table during a fortnight long elections had a  wide range -- from heroin, poppy seeds, drug power, intoxicating tablets to syrup.

How easily and widely the drugs and intoxicants were available during the state elections could be gauged from the election commission's seizure of drugs worth Rs 40 crore. The drugs seized, are normally, not more than 10-15 % percent of the total circulation.

"We believe that the drugs were for electoral purposes," said deputy election commissioner Alok Shukla.

Intoxicants of different kinds play a bigger role in Punjab politics than any other state in India. A commission official explained that bribing a voter is not rampant in Punjab because of its economic influence. But, drug addiction is a huge problem and a probable way to woo electorate. The financial illiteracy of those who mock conspiracy theorists...

From Social Psychological and Personality Science (SPPS), a journal from the independent publisher Sage Publications, comes an article that has predictably seen wide distribution on the Internet. It implies that those who believe in globalist conspiracy theories are illogical – even downright nutty.

The article is entitled "Dead and Alive: Beliefs in Contradictory Conspiracy Theories" and the thesis of the article is that people who believe in conspiracy theories eventually become so immersed in them and so mesmerized that they do not realize they are holding contradictory beliefs.

"Conspiracy theories can form a monological belief system: A self-sustaining worldview comprised of a network of mutually supportive beliefs. The present research shows that even mutually incompatible conspiracy theories are positively correlated in endorsement." (SPPS Abstract)

"Conspiratorialists" become so distrustful of "government" and "authority" that they will impute any and every kind of malevolence to them.

Thus it is that people can claim, on the one hand, that Osama bin Laden is "dead" and died years ago, while simultaneously claiming that bin Laden remains alive and that US and Pakistan government authorities are not being truthful about him and his physical state. Full story...

Elections Bollywood style: India's chutney democracy...

Bollywood is a great replica machine often plagiarising Hollywood and giving blockbusters a masala makeover. Pensionable actors prance around as lead actors and scantily sari clad women perform Michael Jackson style dances. But then almost all of India is a big Bollywood set. Life, religion, education, commerce, law and even politics are one great theatre mimicking western civilisation with chutney twists. And so it is with Indian democracy, a proper Bollywood performance.

There are a few regional states in India undergoing elections through phased timetable. It is pure entertainment with family feuds, dynasties, castism and communalism, the stuff of medieval Kingdoms albeit without the bloody massacres and palace murders. The first election is in Punjab on 30 January. Punjabis in the west are fixated too. The results will be announced in March.

(...)

If anyone has got confused with the plot, not to worry. It's all about which family dynasty will rule. Indian elections, like Bollywood films, are 'fantastical' dramas that make little sense. Like Bollywood films, the script is passed around the regional States and nationally in India, albeit different families and communal fissures. A proper chutney democracy. There are political dynasties in most democracies including UK and USA, but few where leadership is monopolised by families. America eat your heart out. Full story...

Afghan woman strangled to death by husband 'because she gave birth to daughter'

An Afghan woman has been strangled to death, apparently by her husband, who was upset that she gave birth to a second daughter rather than the son he wanted, police said Monday.

It was the latest in a series of grisly examples of subjugation of women that have made headlines in Afghanistan in the past few months – including a 15-year-old tortured and forced into prostitution by in-laws and a female rape victim who was imprisoned for adultery.

The episodes have raised the question of what will happen to the push for women's rights in Afghanistan as the international presence here shrinks along with the military drawdown. Nato forces are scheduled to pull out by the end of 2014.

In the 10 years since the ouster of the Taliban, great strides have been made for women in Afghanistan, with many attending school, working in offices and even sometimes marching in protests. But abuse and repression of women are still common, particularly in rural areas where women are still unlikely to set foot outside of the house without a burka robe that covers them from head to toe. How I woke up to the untruths of Barack Obama...

When I happened to wake up in the middle of the night last Wednesday and caught the BBC World Service’s live relay of President Obama’s State of the Union address to Congress, two passages had me rubbing my eyes in disbelief.

The first came when, to applause, the President spoke about the banking crash which coincided with his barnstorming 2008 election campaign. “The house of cards collapsed,” he recalled. “We learned that mortgages had been sold to people who couldn’t afford or understand them.” He excoriated the banks which had “made huge bets and bonuses with other people’s money”, while “regulators looked the other way and didn’t have the authority to stop the bad behaviour”. This, said Obama, “was wrong. It was irresponsible. And it plunged our economy into a crisis that put millions out of work.”

(...)

A few months after Obama entered the White House, I suggested here that the slogan on which he was elected – “Yes we can” – seemed to have changed to “No we can’t”. It was already obvious that, having won election as an ideal Hollywood version of what “the first black President” should look and sound like, he was in reality no more than a vacuum. His speech last week was as weaselly as any politician’s performance could be, not least in its references to the sub-prime scandal. Full story...

Official behind ACTA quits, denouncing it as a masquerade...

(...)

I want to denounce in the strongest possible manner the entire process that led to the signature of this agreement: no inclusion of civil society organisations, a lack of transparency from the start of the negotiations, repeated postponing of the signature of the text without an explanation being ever given, exclusion of the EU Parliament's demands that were expressed on several occasions in our assembly.

As rapporteur of this text, I have faced never-before-seen manoeuvres from the right wing of this Parliament to impose a rushed calendar before public opinion could be alerted, thus depriving the Parliament of its right to expression and of the tools at its disposal to convey citizens' legitimate demands.”

Everyone knows the ACTA agreement is problematic, whether it is its impact on civil liberties, the way it makes Internet access providers liable, its consequences on generic drugs manufacturing, or how little protection it gives to our geographical indications.

This agreement might have major consequences on citizens' lives, and still, everything is being done to prevent the European Parliament from having its say in this matter. That is why today, as I release this report for which I was in charge, I want to send a strong signal and alert the public opinion about this unacceptable situation. I will not take part in this masquerade.

Mumbai man killed for taking too long in public toilet...

A minor brawl over using a public toilet ended up in the death of a 26-year-old man in Mahim. The deceased, Simon Lingeree, was a resident of the Devaji Govind Chawl at Mahim Causeway. The police has arrested one Santosh Kargutkar (40) for his murder and has been remanded to police custody. Kargutkar, is also a resident of the same chawl and was acquainted with the victim.

On Saturday at around 7pm Lingeree went to use the public bathroom in the area. Kargutkar was standing in queue to use the loo and started to grow impatient as Lingeree had been in the bathroom for a while. When Lingeree finally came out of the bathroom the two got into a heated argument.

"It first started off as a war of words but Kargutkar soon assaulted Lingeree. The two of them got involved in a physical duel but there were no weapons involved," said Ramrao Desai, senior police inspector, Mahim Police station. Full story...

Megaupload data " to be destroyed in days"

American prosecutors have warned that data from users of file-sharing site Megaupload could be deleted from host servers within days.

US officials have blocked access to Megaupload and charged seven men, saying the site facilitated millions of illegal downloads of movies, music and other content.

Megaupload previously hired outside companies to store clients' data but its lawyer, Ira Rothken, said the US government has thwarted cash flow by freezing its funds.

A letter filed by prosecutors on January 27 said storage companies Carpathia Hosting and Cogent Communications Group may begin deleting data from Thursday onwards. Full story...

'Honour killings': Canadian jury finds Afghan family guilty...

A jury in Canada has found three members of an Afghan family guilty of drowning three teenage sisters and another woman in what the judge described as "cold-blooded, shameful murders" resulting from a "twisted concept of honour". The verdicts concludes a case that shocked and riveted Canadians.

Prosecutors said the defendants killed the three teenage sisters because they dishonoured the family by defying its strict rules on dress, dating, socialising and using the internet.

(...)

"It is difficult to conceive of a more heinous, more despicable, more honourless crime," Maranger said. "The apparent reason behind these cold-blooded, shameful murders was that the four completely innocent victims offended your completely twisted concept of honour ... that has absolutely no place in any civilised society."

In a statement following the verdict, the Canadian justice minister, Rob Nicholson, called honour killing "barbaric and unacceptable in Canada". Full story...

Manila's forgers graduate with honors from 'Recto University'

If you don't have the time, inclination and, more importantly, the money to go to university in Manila, you can still get a degree. It will cost you between $US10 and $US60, it will take about two hours to complete and it will be fake.

Welcome to "Recto University," the name Manila mockingly gives to the strip of document counterfeiters that openly ply their trade between Claro M. Recto and Rizal Avenues in the Philippines capital.

Located a stone's throw from Manila's university district and, somewhat ironically, Manila City Jail, the counterfeiters of Recto can run off a university testamur, any type of diploma, a job reference and, more worryingly, a pilot's license and a seaman's certificate in a matter of hours.

"Today business is not so good," says a hawker sitting beside a makeshift sign displaying fake diplomas, driver's licenses and job references that can be bought for as little as 500 pesos (US$11.50). Full story...

Pakistani TV host sacked after haranguing couples for 'immoral behaviour' in parks...

A Pakistani TV host has been sacked after an episode of her morning TV programme showed her ambushing young couples and demanding to know whether they were involved in immoral behavior.

Samaa TV host Maya Khan was filmed charging around a park in Lahore, Pakistan, asking youngsters what they were up to, whether they were married or engaged and if their parents knew where they were.

In one particularly cringeworthy scene the 31-year-old host - who has been dubbed the 'vigil-auntie' - demanded to see a couple's wedding certificate after they told her they were married.

The show sparked outrage with viewers branded it - a 'witch hunt' and taking to the internet in their thousands to register their disgust. More + video...

Jon Stewart attacks worker abuse in Apple's Foxconn in China...

(...)

It is hard for Americans, especially those involved with organized labor, to turn a blind eye to the mistreatment of the Chinese workforce, but the overarching economic realities of the global economy make it difficult for discrete individuals in the U.S. to take action on their behalf, even symbolically. The Daily Show clip states that the price of iPhones would go up 23 percent if workers were paid fairly. At a time when penny-pinching is becoming everyone’s favorite physical activity, is the iPhone-buying public prepared to shell out the extra bucks? One could make the argument that the demand for Apple and other products of similar penetration is sufficient that people would pay the extra 23 percent. But the bigger question is whether these devices are being overpriced to begin with, considering the anti-worker cost-cutting measures being implemented on the supply side. Why shouldn’t the workers wages go up and Foxconn, God forbid, merely retain 23 percent less? Full story + video...

Thousands of parents in Australia illegally home schooling their children...

As a new school year begins, more than 50,000 Australian children will be home-schooled and in most cases, their parents are doing it illegally.

It is compulsory to send children between the ages of six and 16 to school, or register them for home schooling, but more parents are opting out of the traditional school system and keeping their children at home.

However, thousands of parents across the country are not registered and that means they potentially face prosecution.

Governments have been reluctant to take legal action, but in a landmark case last October, Bob Osmark from the Home Schooling Association of Queensland was prosecuted for not registering with the Home Education Unit to home school his 13-year-old daughter. Full story...

India factory workers revolt, kill company president...

Workers at the Regency Ceramics factory in the India raided the home of their boss, and beat him senseless with led pipes after a wage dispute turned ugly.

The workers were enraged enough to kill president K. C. Chandrashekhar after their union leader, M. Murali Mohan, was killed by baton-wielding riot police on Thursday. The labor violence occurred in Yanam, a small city in Andra Pradesh state on India’s east coast.Police were called to the factory by management to quell a labor dispute. The workers had been calling for higher pay and reinstatement of previously laid off workers since October. Murali was fired a few hours later. The next morning, at 06:00 on Friday, Murali went to the factory along with some workers and tried to obstruct the morning shift, local media reported. Long batons, known as lathis in India, were used by police who charged the workers, injuring at least 20 of them, including Murali. He died on the way to hospital, according to The Times of India. Hundreds of workers gathered outside the police station and demanded that officers be charged with homicide.

Curfew and other civil orders were imposed in Yanam because of the uprising led to the murder of the Regency president. Police reported that rioters also torched several vehicles outside the police station. Eight Regency Ceramics workers were injured in police firing that followed; the condition of two of them is critical. More than 100 protesters have been arrested. Full story...

U.S falls to 47th in press freedom rankings after Occupy crackdown...

Sweeping protests around the world made it an extremely difficult year for the media, and tested journalists as never before, the annual report into press freedom reveals.

The annual report by Reporters Without Borders has been released, showing the United States fell 27 points on the list due to the many arrests of journalists covering Occupy Wall Street protests.

The slide in the United States places it just behind Comoros and Taiwan in a group with Argentina and Romania.

Reporters Without Borders said the heightened unrest around the world resulted in a significant shake-up of the group's annual Press Freedom Index, which assesses governments' commitment to protecting media freedoms. Full story...

Teens broke into CNN newsroom to check Facebook pages!!!

The two teens caught checking their Facebook pages after allegedly breaking into CNN's Atlanta newsroom weren't able to post status updates Friday afternoon. That's because they were in jail, each held on $500 bond.

Two teens were arrested around 3:30 a.m. Friday on the fifth floor of CNN Center, where they were found checking their Facebook pages, according to police.

Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones said CNN security contacted officers from Zone 5, which is also headquartered in CNN Center, to report that there was “someone in their secure area newsroom.”

Aldayne Fearon, 18, and Francis Mutemwa, 17, climbed over a ledge from the Omni Hotel to gain access to the CNN newsroom “and started working on two computers,” Jones said. “At the time of their arrest, they were checking their Facebook pages on those computers.” Full story...

Monsanto investor Bill Gates says GMO crops needed to fight starvation...

Bill Gates, the heavy Monsanto investor who purchased 500,000 shares of the biotech giant in 2010, has been touting Monsanto’s genetically modified creations as a tool that is necessary to prevent starvation in poor nations. The same poor nations where thousands of farmers routinely commit suicide after being completely bankrupt by Monsanto’s overpriced and ineffective GM seeds.

The same company that we recently exposed to be running ‘slave-like’ working conditions, forcing poor workers to operate the corn fields for 14 hours per day while withholding pay.

According to Gates, this is the company whose GMO crops are going to save the world from starvation. Of course, along with ‘saving the world from starvation’, GMO crops also bring along a large number of unwanted health and environmental effects. Full story...

1,000 prisoners in Kyrgyzstan sew their lips together in protest...

More than 1,000 prisoners in Kyrgyzstan have sewn their lips together, a grotesque act inmates describe as a protest of their dismal conditions, but which authorities blame on organised criminal gangs who resent attempts to break the power they wield in prisons.

Kyrgyzstan, a poor ex-Soviet nation of 5.3 million, holds around 7,600 inmates in its detention centres.

The buildings are notoriously crowded and disease-ridden, and they have not escaped the reach of powerful criminal syndicates who also threaten the stability of the country, which hosts a key US air base.

Over the years, prisoners have staged numerous protests - until Saturday, the vast majority of the prisoners were on a 10-day-long hunger strike. But the sewing of lips has been one of the most unusual and brazen ways to bring attention to the prisoners' plight. Full story...

Dentist admits using paper clip for root canals!!!

A former dentist has pleaded guilty to Medicaid fraud for using sections of paper clips instead of stainless steel posts in root canals in an effort to save money.

Michael Clair, who had a practice in Fall River, is scheduled to be sentenced next week. He pleaded guilty Friday to defrauding Medicaid of $130,000, assault and battery, illegally prescribing prescription drugs and witness intimidation charges.

Some of Clair's patients reported infections after he performed root canals on them, said Grant Woodman, a spokesman for state Attorney General Martha Coakley, whose office prosecuted Clair.

Prosecutors say Clair was suspended by Medicaid in 2002 but continued filing by using the names of other dentists in his practice. Full story...

Torture and abuse in Libya...

NATO's alleged "responsibility to protect" was subterfuge. Months of terror bombings left Libya a charnel house.

Africa's most developed country was ravaged. Tens of thousands were killed, multiples more injured, and millions left on their own to sink or swim.

When is war not war? It's when mass killing and destruction are called the right thing. It's also when terrorizing and traumatizing an entire population goes unaddressed.

Add horrific torture to other crimes and abuses, according to Amnesty International (AI), Doctors Without Borders, and Human Rights Watch (HRW). Full story...

Atheist teen forces school to remove prayer from wall after 49 years, gets online threats...

She is 16, the daughter of a firefighter and a nurse, a self-proclaimed nerd who loves Harry Potter and Facebook. But Jessica Ahlquist is also an outspoken atheist who has incensed this heavily Roman Catholic city with a successful lawsuit to get a prayer removed from the wall of her high school auditorium, where it has hung for 49 years.

A federal judge ruled this month that the prayer’s presence at Cranston High School West was unconstitutional, concluding that it violated the principle of government neutrality in religion.

In the weeks since, residents have crowded school board meetings to demand an appeal, Jessica has received online threats and the police have escorted her at school, and Cranston, a dense city of 80,000 just south of Providence, has throbbed with raw emotion. Full story...

If the TSA will treat Senator Rand Paul like a scumbag, what will they to TO YOU...

On Monday, U.S. Senator Rand Paul was detained by the TSA for about two hours at an airport in Nashville. By doing so, TSA officials directly violated the U.S. Constitution and they demonstrated once again why the rest of the world is coming to regard us as a bunch of disgusting, arrogant "pig people". Do we really want to get such a bad reputation that virtually nobody will ever want to visit this country? We are going to absolutely destroy our tourism industry with this nonsense. Yes, we all want to fly safely, but other countries get the job done without their security officials running around acting like a bunch of Nazi prison guards. The TSA should be shut down, but if Congress wants it to continue to exist it should be given a dual mandate. It should be directed to protect the dignity of the American people first, and the safety of the American people second. If those running the TSA don't believe that this is possible, then they should be immediately replaced, because there are a whole lot of good people out there that could get the job done. Right now, TSA officials are treating American citizens like they aren't even human. The truth is that Rand Paul got off easy compared to what has happened to many other Americans. Full story...

Mysterious blue balls fall from the sky in Bournemouth...

A man in Dorset has been left mystified after tiny blue spheres fell from the sky into his garden.

Steve Hornsby from Bournemouth said the 3cm diameter balls came raining down late on Thursday afternoon during a hail storm.

He found about a dozen of the balls in his garden. He said: "[They're] difficult to pick up, I had to get a spoon and flick them into a jam jar."

The Met Office said the jelly-like substance was "not meteorological" Full story...

Syria: claims of 'racial cleansing' as 14 family members are massacred...

Even by the numbing standards of Syria's uprising, the most brutal of the Arab Spring, the images are harrowing.

Their faces battered and bloodied, the four children are laid out on a bed. The camera hovers first over the corpse of a male toddler in a turquoise sleep suit and blue and pink socks. He is not yet of walking age; his legs are still bowed.

A bib around his neck is splattered in blood and he is lying on the upstretched hand of his older sister, whose face is stained crimson. Beneath them on the sheet are the bodies of two more young children, a boy and a girl, both bearing horrific injuries.

The bloodshed does not stop there. On the floor just to the left of the bed is a veiled woman, perhaps the children's mother. Full story...
