Mayawati, head of India's poorest state opens £10 million theme park dedicated to her family...

Mayawati, the 'untouchable' chief minister of one of India's poorest states, yesterday unveiled a controversial £10 million theme park to honour the country's low caste Dalit heroes, including giant statues of herself and her parents.

The 'Dalit queen' who describes herself as a 'living goddess' and is known in India as 'behenji' or 'respected sister,' used the inauguration of the park, unofficially known as Ambedkar Park in honour of the 'untouchable' architect of India's constitution, to launch her party's campaign for next year's Uttar Pradesh state elections.

She arrived by helicopter to a welcome from 40,000 members of her Bahujan Samaj Party and a vast security detail of more than 2,500 policeman, to officially open the 33 hectare park and its 15 statues of Dalit icons, including B.R Ambedkar, Kanshi Ram, her late lover and the founder of her BSP party, and two statues of herself. The centrepiece is a domed structure with 300 feet high columns crowned with carved elephants, watching over the statues of all three Dalit icons. Outside, there are 24 statues of elephants – the symbol of her party – each 18 feet high. Full story...
