Lebanon Sunni clergy reject domestic abuse law...

Lebanon's highest Sunni Muslim authority on Friday rejected a bill aimed at protecting women against domestic violence and marital rape, saying it would lead to the demise "of the family as in the West."

"Islam is very aware of and concerned with... resolving problems of poor treatment... but this should not happen by cloning Western laws that encourage the breakdown of the family and do not suit our society," said the influential Dar al-Fatwa in a statement on its website.

Dar al-Fatwa also slammed as "heresy" a clause in the bill that criminalises marital rape, accusing those behind the draft law of "inventing new types of crimes." More...

  1. Do not protect crime. Abuse is a crime by all standards and should be accountable for in the Lebanese laws. Please people stand up to your rights and protect yourself and your beloved ones and say NO to the abusers and NO to the people who protect them.

  2. The bill that protects women should be passed and approved no matter what some religious authorities believe. The bill would ensure that abusers would be taken to civil courts. After all, religious authorities do not want to loose their power in tackling family affairs. And that is not right.

  3. Please ask this Sunni authority if he knows what is it being verbally, emotionally and physically abused!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please ask him if he knows what is it living in fear of the abuser!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please ask him if he knows what is it living feeling worthless just because of everyday insults and curses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please ask him if he knows what is it like living without dreams simply because the abuser deprived you of your dreams, deprived you of your smile, deprived you of your life.
Only those that know what is it like........ can and are entitled to give their opinion, can push and support the new Lebanese bill, can fight fairly to ensure that they get their lives back.
