Chronically ill, autistic blogger's lawyer blasts Denver Post for Righthaven suit...

Twenty-year old diabetic North Carolina hobby blogger Brian Hill, who's being sued by Righthaven LLC for unauthorized use of a Denver Post photo, is practically destitute and can't afford a lawyer. But after reading our item about the case, Fort Collins intellectual property attorney David Kerr offered to take Hill's case on a pro bono basis -- and while he faults Righthaven for its tactics, he also blames the Post for employing such a heavy-handed outfit.

"I'm going to do everything I can to get some answers from the Denver Post -- to say why they're working with this organization," acknowledges Kerr, an attorney with the Santangelo Law Offices. "I'd submit that they're the Post's copyright enforcement arm. They try to contractually separate themselves, but when you come down to it, if the Post really wanted to sue an autistic, chronically ill blogger in North Carolina for one photo, they should put their name on the suit, instead of going through Righthaven and playing contractual games." 60% of Saudi men financially exploit their wives: study...

A Saudi Arabian social researcher claims through his research that 60 percent of Saudi Arabian husbands financially exploit their wives’ money, the London-based Asharq al-Awsat reported on Friday.

Dr. Mahmoud Kisnawi from Univeristy of Umm al-Qura concentrated mainly on working wives, and said wives allow their husbands to take advantage of their salaries under the pretence of “ensuring family stability,” despite Islam giving women the legal and religious right to have her own complete salary.

Dr. Kisnawi told Asharq al-Awsat that 60 percent of husbands use their wives salaries to enter the real estate market or complete the construction of a home, without taking into consideration the needs and desires of their wives. He added that this phenomenon contributed to the increase in divorce rates in Saudi Arabia. More...

Iran threatens to boycott London 2012 Olympics over "Zion" logo...

Iran has threatened to boycott the London Olympics unless the organisers replace the official logo, which Tehran claims spells out the word "Zion".

The logo, a jagged representation of the year 2012, has been said by its critics to resemble many things, from a swastika to a sexual act, but the Iranian government argues it represents a veiled pro-Israeli conspiracy.

In a formal complaint to the International Olympic Committee, Tehran has called for the graphic to be replaced and its designers "confronted", warning that Iranian athletes might otherwise be ordered to stay away from the London Games. More...

He also decided to freeze the assets of the former president and his family, said MENA.

In this Indian district, 13 women have been burnt alive in past 12 months...

Sandhya Richariya was 18 when she was burnt alive in March 2010 inside her home.

She was allegedly killed by her neighbours in her village - a group of four people - during the day because she had fallen in love with a man from a different caste.

She was rushed to the hospital by her parents and the village Sarpanch. She said four men had poured kerosene over her. Those four men were declared not guilty by a local court a week ago because the police had not got Sandhya's doctor to testify that she was mentally alert and capable of identifying those who murdered her. DNA "genetic patdown" introduced to airports by DHS...

A new level of invasive screening is scheduled for airports this summer: a portable DNA scanner to conduct on-site, real-time genetic testing.

This technology is being implemented under the cover of combating human trafficking, illegal immigration, and finding missing persons, but Richard Seldon of NetBio, creator of the scanners, clearly states that "DNA information has the potential to become part of the fabric of day-to-day life." In an interview with Katie Drummond who broke this story for The Daily, Seldon envisions additional applications in emergency rooms, food safety tests, and law enforcement.

DNA collection is actually nothing new, as the Pentagon has admitted that it currently has a DNA database with 80,000 suspected foreign terrorists on it, and growing daily. However, this collection apparatus has been secretly in place for Americans as well. Lawsuits are pending from families who uncovered a secret program to collect DNA from babies and store it in a military database. However, that was a secret that had to be uncovered. The fact that DNA screening is being rolled out openly marks a new level of blatant tyranny in America. More...

Singapore trader pays SGD9 million ransom for family kidnapped in Malaysia...

A Singaporean businessman was forced to pay a RM21 million ransom to release his family after they were kidnapped in Johor Baru, reigniting fears of visiting the neighbouring city among residents of the island state.

The man’s wife, daughter and maid were driving home when they were forced off the road by another vehicle in the capital of Johor recently before the kidnappers took over the vehicle and held hostage.

Reports say that this may be the largest ransom payment in Malaysia in recent years and despite government claims that crime in Malaysia has dropped by 16 per cent, this latest episode will mar public confidence in crime prevention.

Police sources said that the kidnappers sent a picture via MMS of the three victims being held at gunpoint before demanding a whopping SGD50 million (RM115 million) in ransom. More...

Sydney mayor in trouble for proposing threesome with Chinese interpreter!!!

MOST men would agree that an opinion on a woman's chest size is best kept to oneself. But this Sydney mayor is not most men.

Kevin Crameri, awarded an OAM in 1999 for services to local government and the community, has stood down as mayor of Penrith - and faces possible suspension - following an investigation into allegations he behaved inappropriately on an overseas business trip. Mr Crameri was on a three-week trip to East Asia last November, when he allegedly propositioned an interpreter for a threesome and commented on the chest sizes of Asian women.

An independent report, which will be considered at the Penrith Council meeting tomorrow, found he breached the council's code of conduct 22 times, including holding an interpreter's hand when he climbed the Great Wall of China and "cuddling" women who wanted photos taken with him. More...

Cairo in Wisconsin...

The call reportedly arrived from Cairo. Pizza for the protesters, the voice said. It was Saturday, February 20th, and by then Ian's Pizza on State Street in Madison, Wisconsin, was overwhelmed.

One employee had been assigned the sole task of answering the phone and taking down orders. And in they came, from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, from Morocco, Haiti, Turkey, Belgium, Uganda, China, New Zealand, and even a research station in Antarctica. More than 50 countries around the globe. Ian's couldn't make pizza fast enough, and the generosity of distant strangers with credit cards was paying for it all.

Those pizzas, of course, were heading for the Wisconsin state capitol, an elegant domed structure at the heart of this Midwestern college town. For nearly two weeks, tens of thousands of raucous, sleepless, grizzled, energized protesters have called the stately capitol building their home. As the police moved in to clear it out on Sunday afternoon, it was still the pulsing heart of the largest labor protest in my lifetime, the focal point of rallies and concerts against a politically-charged piece of legislation proposed by Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, a hard-right Republican. Horrific US medical experiments come to light...

Shocking as it may seem, U.S. government doctors once thought it was fine to experiment on disabled people and prison inmates. Such experiments included giving hepatitis to mental patients in Connecticut, squirting a pandemic flu virus up the noses of prisoners in Maryland, and injecting cancer cells into chronically ill people at a New York hospital.

Much of this horrific history is 40 to 80 years old, but it is the backdrop for a meeting in Washington this week by a presidential bioethics commission. The meeting was triggered by the government's apology last fall for federal doctors infecting prisoners and mental patients in Guatemala with syphilis 65 years ago.

U.S. officials also acknowledged there had been dozens of similar experiments in the United States - studies that often involved making healthy people sick. More...

African dictator's son orders £236 million luxury super yacht...

The son of Equatorial Guinea's dictator of 30 years commissioned plans to build a super yacht costing $380 million (£236 million), nearly three times what the country spends on health and education each year, a corruption watchdog said on Monday.

The statement from Global Witness said that German company Kusch Yachts has been asked to build the yacht, housing a cinema, restaurant, bar and swimming pool, though construction has not yet started.

Global Witness has been urging Washington to institute sanctions against Teodorin Obiang, whose extravagant lifestyle currently includes a $35 million-dollar mansion in Malibu, California, a $33 million jet and a fleet of luxury cars, while earning a salary of $6,799 a month as agriculture minister. Married at 13 to 60-year-old man, abandoned at 30, woman now lives on streets of Saudi Arabia...

When she was 13-years old, Salma (full name withheld) from Saudi Arabia was forced to marry a man aged over 60.

The man paid her father a dowry of SR250,000 ($68,000), but Salma says it was like she was actually sold.

Salma, now in her 30s, has no home and is deprived of seeing her six children following her divorce. When she tried to take them, she was thrown in prison for six months.

As if all this was not enough. After she was divorced and her children taken away, her father tried to sell her again - this would-be husband refused to offer more than SR100,000.

But it was her not her father who turned down that offer. Feeling that she had enough, she packed and fled her home. More...

TSA officer stole $30,000 from travellers with boss's approval! WTF!

A former Transportation Security Administration screener at Newark Liberty International Airport admitted to stealing up to $30,000 in cash from travelers, federal prosecutors said.

Al Raimi, 29, of Woodridge, pleaded guilty Thursday to a charge of theft by a government officer. Raimi worked as a lead officer at a security checkpoint at the airport. Between October 2009 until Sept. 8 2010, Raimi said he stole the cash from airline passengers. Raimi then "kicked up" some of that money to his immediate supervisor, Michael Arato. "In exchange, Arato allowed Raimi to continue stealing," said Asst. U.S. Attorney Erick Kanefsky in a statement. More...

Le Scandal: The Arab world's revolutions have exposed the moral bankruptcy of France's foreign policy....

The year in French foreign policy began rather well, with a feeling of a fresh start as the new minister of foreign affairs, Michèle Alliot-Marie, returned home rejuvenated from her Christmas holiday to provide renewed strength and focus at the Quai d'Orsay, the home of the ministry. As it turned out, neither her return, nor the vacation itself were such a great idea.

Two months into 2011, the transformation of North Africa has exposed a slew of moral failings in French policy in the Arab world, and it has raised a flurry of questions about Alliot-Marie's ethics, judgment, and veracity. Political observers and even government ministers are already debating who might take her place, perhaps in the coming days. The French diplomatic corps is increasingly turning on the president as his Middle East policy continues to disintegrate.

It all began in Tunisia, a former French protectorate. If any country should have seen the first North African people's revolution of the 21st century coming, it was France, Tunisia's largest commercial partner and main lender. More than 22,000 French citizens live in Tunisia, and approximately 600,000 Tunisians live in France. Former strongman Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali was such a reliable ally throughout his 23-year reign that it seemed almost natural when French President Nicolas Sarkozy chose to visit Tunisia on his first presidential trip outside the European Union. Labiaplasty 'designer vaginas' surgery increase blamed on pornography...

Medical experts have sounded the alarm over soaring rates of labiaplasty, as the preliminary findings of a study show women are increasingly turning to private providers to pursue "designer vaginas".

NHS and private sector professionals have warned that some young women approaching cosmetic surgery companies are depressed or on medication, and are being sold operations without preliminary access to alternative psychological therapies.

Experts carrying out the research at King's College London also suggest that the so-called "pornification" of modern culture may be driving up surgery rates to unprecedented levels as both men and women have increased exposure to pornographic imagery via the internet. Recent studies have shown sharp rises in the numbers of young people accessing porn. More...

Gaddafi's 'voluptuous' blonde nurse ditches him and flees to the Ukraine!!!

Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi on Sunday was ditched by yet another close confidant — the Ukrainian nurse thought to have a close relationship with the leader.

Halyna Kolotnytska, 38, joined senior government officials, diplomats and pilots who have deserted Gadhafi after he brutally suppressed anti-government protests.

Kolotnytska arrived in Kyiv in the early hours of Sunday on a plane that evacuated 122 Ukrainians and 68 foreign nationals from the violence-torn North African country, according to Channel 5 footage.

Kolotnytska could not be reached for comment Sunday.

Lecturer in Zimbabwe brutally tortured for showing Middle East protest videos to students...

Munyaradzi Gwisai, a lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe’s law school, was showing internet videos about the tumult sweeping across North Africa to students and activists last Saturday, when state security agents burst into his office.

The agents seized laptop computers, DVD discs and a video projector before arresting 45 people, including Gwisai, who runs the Labor Law Center at the University of Zimbabwe. All 45 have been charged with treason — which can carry a sentence of life imprisonment or death — for, in essence, watching viral videos.

A new kidney transplant scandal in South Africa...

Four Top Durban surgeons were scapegoats forced to take the fall for Netcare and surgeons in Joburg And Cape Town who also allegedly performed more than 200 “illegal” kidney transplant operations in an international organ scandal that rocked Netcare’s St Augustine’s Hospital.

According to a prominent Durban vascular surgeon, Prof John Robbs, the 109 operations performed in Durban were just the “overflow” of procedures performed on Israeli patients who illegally bought “donor” kidneys from Israelis And Brazilians and travelled to the three South African cities for the “transplant tourism” operations at Netcare hospitals, as well as the public Groote Schuur And Charlotte Maxeke hospitals.

Netcare spokeswoman Martina Nicholson yesterday confirmed that cross-border operations had been performed at its Garden City Hospital in Joburg and its Chris Barnard Memorial Hospital in Cape Town, while Gauteng Department of Health spokesman Simon Zwane called for a police investigation into the allegations. Girls drop out of schools in India because of lack of toilets...

If you thought poverty or family resistance are the primary reasons for girls to drop out of school, then this will come as a shocker - many of them prefer to drop out, simply because their schools have no toilets for girls.

To the people of the Middle East: Fight for freedom, not democracy...

Over the last month or so, people have been throwing off, or trying to throw off, the shackles of their oppressive governments. It started in Tunisia, spread to Egypt, then Yemen, Bahrain, and now Libya. In every instance, though, the protestors have been calling for democracy. I suppose that's understandable; the grass on democracy's side of the fence probably looks and probably is a lot greener than that on the dictatorial side. I'm probably underselling democracy with that statement. After all, democracy is often held out as the gold standard for (good) government. Winston Churchill endorsed it, saying, "democracy is the worst form of government except all the others." Despite the actual wording, when reading or hearing Churchill's statement, people often "hear" that democracy is the best form of government. In reality, we can rightly infer from the statement that all forms of government are terrible. In Churchill's opinion, democracy is just the least terrible. More...

Voodoo ritual went fatally wrong and caused New York City fire...

Candles ringing a bed in a voodoo ceremony that included sex ignited sheets and clothing strewn nearby and caused a fatal apartment fire last weekend, a city official said Friday.

The blaze started around 6:40 p.m. Sunday, when a woman visited a fourth-floor apartment in Brooklyn and paid a man $300 to perform a mystical ceremony that would bring her good luck, according to fire marshals with the Fire Department of New York.

The man was known in the neighborhood as a priest, and the two were either having sex, or had sex when the fire started from the candles on the floor, though it's not clear if it was part of the ceremony, said the official, who had direct knowledge of the case but spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing. Fed up with taxes, New York woman grows tobacco leaves and makes her own cigarettes!!!

The cigarettes Audrey Silk used to smoke — Parliament Lights — are made at a factory in Richmond, Va. The cigarettes she smokes these days are made and grown in Brooklyn, at her house.

Ms. Silk’s backyard is home to raspberry and rose bushes, geraniums, impatiens and 100 tobacco plants in gardening buckets near her wooden deck. Inside her house, around the corner from Flatbush Avenue, in Marine Park, she has to be careful stepping into her basement — one wrong move could ruin her cigarettes. Dozens of tobacco leaves hang there, drying on wires she has strung across the room, where they turn a crisp light brown as they age above a stack of her old Springsteen records.

He refuses to fly ... because pilot was a woman!!!

A Mumbai-bound flight was delayed by one-and-a-half hours at the Delhi airport on Friday morning - first by fog and then by a passenger who did not want to travel on a plane piloted by a woman.

Passengers on board had a curious story to tell as to why Indigo flight 6E 179, supposed to depart at 8.10 a.m., could not take off before 9.40 a.m.

Man gave $200,000 to fake online girlfriend ...

Naperville police said the 48-year-old man called investigators Wednesday to say he believed the woman, with whom he had been involved in a 2 1/2-year online relationship, had been kidnapped in London, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Friday.

The man told police he had wired $200,000 to the woman during the relationship to different bank accounts in Nigeria, Malaysia, England and the United States.

Investigators said the ID card the woman showed the man was a sample driver's license from Florida.

The man "was in disbelief" when officers told him the woman was not real, police said. Source...

Saudi king accused of misjudged bribery in attempt to avoid unrest...

Leading intellectuals in Saudi Arabia have warned that grand financial gestures are no substitute for meaningful political reform, after King Abdullah unveiled a $36bn (£22bn) social welfare package in advance of planned anti-government protests next month.

In a statement released on Thursday, a group of Saudi scholars called on the royal family to learn from recent uprisings in the Gulf and North Africa and to start listening to the voices of the kingdom's disenfranchised young people, some of whom are planning a "day of rage" on 11 March. Several Islamic thinkers, as well as a female academic and a poet, are among those adding their names to the declaration.

"The Saudi regime is learning all the wrong lessons from Egypt and Tunisia," said Shadi Hamid, director of research at the Brookings Doha Centre. "The unrest in the region is not fundamentally economic, it's fundamentally about politics. Economics plays a role but what the events of the past few months have shown us is that Arabs are looking for freedom, dignity and democracy – and if the Saudi leadership can't see that, then they're in trouble." Shoppers just can't avoid GM foods...

You may not want to eat genetically engineered foods. Chances are, you are eating them anyway.

Genetically modified plants grown from seeds engineered in labs now provide much of the food we eat. Most corn, soybean and cotton crops grown in the United States have been genetically modified to resist pesticides or insects, and corn and soy are common food ingredients.

The Agriculture Department has approved three more genetically engineered crops in the past month, and the Food and Drug Administration could approve fast-growing genetically modified salmon for human consumption this year. More...

Singapore defends death penalty in first rights report to UN...

Singapore in its inaugural report to the United Nations on the status of human rights defended its tough stance on the death penalty as well as other issues like detention without trial that have repeatedly come under fire from human rights groups.

The city-state is set in May to undergo the first stage of a review under the UN's Human Rights Council as part of the UN's effort to review the human rights situation in all its 192 member states.

The report released late Friday said 'as a young city-state with a multiracial, multireligious and multilingual population, Singapore has no margin for error.' More...

Conservative Catholic group in Philippine village bans condoms, contraceptive pills and sex education!!!

In Barangay Ayala Alabang in Muntinlupa City, people will need a prescription to buy a condom.

The Sanggunian Barangay of Ayala Alabang released an ordinance that takes effect on February 24, 2011 that seeks, among others, to penalize the sale and purchase of "anti-conceptional substance or devices," like condoms and contraceptive pills, without a prescription.

The ordinance requires health services performed within the territorial jurisdiction of Barangay Ayala Alabang to use only "safe, ethical, effective, legal and non-abortifacient medicines or drugs or machines, devices or methods of treatment that do not cause abortion intentionally or unintentionally." Italy's bad romance: How Berlusconi went gaga for Gaddafi...

The longest underwater pipeline in the Mediterranean runs from the coast of Libya to the Italian island of Sicily. Inaugurated in 2004 by Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, the 323 miles (520 km) pipeline and its northward flow of gas might as well be a symbol of the relationship between the two countries.

Of all the mutual back-scratching among Europe's rich democracies and North Africa's strongmen, Italy's dependency on Gaddafi stands apart. Libya is Italy's largest supplier of oil, providing for roughly a third of the country's energy consumption. The dictator's government owns a substantial share of the Milan stock market, including 7.5% of Unicredit, Italy's largest bank; 2% of the Italian oil company ENI; 2% of the country's second largest industrial group, Finmeccanica; and 7% of the Turin-based Juventus soccer club. Libya also provides a critical market for its northern neighbor's struggling construction firms. And, since 2008, when Italy agreed to invest $5 billion in Libya, Gaddafi has kept a tight grip on the attempts by his citizens and other African migrants to take ships northward on the Mediterranean. Gaddafi's son joins Libyan protesters???

The youngest son of the embattled ruler Muammar Gaddafi has joined the pro-democracy protesters in Libya amid an unabated outpouring of rage against Gaddafi, reports say.

According to the reports, Saif al-Arab, Gaddafi's youngest son, who was sent by his father to cooperate with Libyan security forces in the massive crackdown on pro-democracy protesters joined forces with the demonstrators in the eastern city of Benghazi on Thursday.

Saif al-Arab, who is widely regarded as the most low-profile of Gaddafi's sons have also hinted that his father would commit suicide or flee to Latin America in the face of rising public outcry over his tyrannical rule. More...

Bolivian town kidnaps own soccer team!!!

At 13,000 feet, Estadio Los Andes in Bolivia is one of the highest soccer stadiums in the world. It is also the only one to my knowledge that has been the scene of a mass kidnapping this season. All 43 players, coaches and personnel of the La Paz FC pro soccer team were locked into their stadium for more than four hours on Wednesday; prevented from leaving by fans who were protesting the league’s decision to hold a scheduled home game across town at a larger stadium. Yes, correct: the team’s own fans held them “hostage.”

LFPB (Bolivia’s Football Association) closed the stadium this week, saying that the ground was was unsafe. This despite the fact that the Condor Men had already played two matches there. Faced with trekking across town for home games, local fans decided to padlock the gates … with their team still inside. La Paz FC had just finished practice when the discovered that they weren’t going anywhere. Among complaints by fans is that the other stadium is difficult to get to, and that local businesses will suffer without the games. More...

South Korea drops leaflets into the North about Middle East protests...

South Korea's military has been dropping leaflets into North Korea about democracy protests in Egypt, a legislator said on Friday, but doubts lingered it would trigger calls for change in the tightly controlled country.

As part of a psychological campaign, the South Korean military also sent food, medicines and radios for residents in a bid to encourage North Koreans to think about change, a conservative South Korean parliament member, Song Young-sun, said.

While Seoul's move could cause alarm in the North's leadership, Pyongyang's rigid refusal to respond to demands for change means its people will unlikely rise up to the type of protests against their leaders as in Egypt and Libya, analysts and officials said. More...

Ten unusual things I didn't about Steve Jobs...

I was standing right next to Steve Jobs in 1989 and it was the closest thing I ever felt to being gay. The guy was incredibly wealthy, good looking enough to get any girl, a nerd super-rockstar who had just convinced my school to buy a bunch of NeXT machines (which, btw, were in fact the best machines to program on at the time) and I just wanted to be him. I wanted to be him ever since I had the Apple II+ as a kid. Ever since I shoplifted Ultima II, Castle Wolfenstein, and half a dozen other games that my friends and I would then rip from each other and pretend to be sick so we could stay home and play all day.

I don’t care about Apple stock. (Well, I do think it will be the first trillion dollar company). Or about his business successes. That’s boring. The only thing that matters to me is how Steve Jobs became the greatest artist that ever lived. You only get to be an artist like that by turning everything in your life upside down, by making horrible, ugly, mistakes, by doing things so differently that people will never be able to figure you out. By failing, cheating, lying, having everyone hate you, and coming out the other side with a little bit more wisdom than the rest. More...

Nicolas Sarkozy's foreign policies denounced by rebel diplomats...

Nicolas Sarkozy is facing an unprecedented revolt by French diplomats who warn that his foreign policy gaffes have left France pathetically diminished on the world stage.

After weeks of embarrassing French slip-ups – including Paris blindly standing by the Tunisian and Egyptian dictatorships until the last minute – a group of diplomats have published a scathing attack on the president in Le Monde.

The anonymous letter from serving and former diplomats warns: "France's voice in the world has disappeared." They accuse Sarkozy of amateurism, acting on impulse, ignoring ambassadors and caring more about how he looks on TV than the fundamentals of foreign affairs.

(...)

French diplomacy is struggling to recover from its mishandling of the popular uprisings in the Arab world and cosy business and arms ties to authoritarian regimes. During the brutal repression of the Tunisian revolution, the French foreign minister, Michele Alliot-Marie, offered the "savoir faire" of French police to help the regime. It emerged that mid-revolt, she and her parents stayed with, and did business with, a crony of the dictator Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali. Full story...
