Chinese-American man's passport photo 'too yellow'

The US State Department has withdrawn a letter written to a Chinese-American man rejecting his passport application because his photograph was "too yellow".

Conceding that the letter "can be interpreted as offensive", the department's consular section told the Daily Telegraph that the letter was "not meant to offend and was intended to address the colour hue of the photograph itself, not the applicant's skin tone".

The May 26 letter from the National Passport Centre at New Hampshire to a Mr Li, whose full name and address were blacked out, has circulated widely on the Internet, prompting disbelief at the insensitivity of the reasoning given for rejection. More...
