30,000 protest against Vedanta mining project in India...

A petition signed by over 30,000 people against a planned mine expansion in India will be delivered to the mining company on Wednesday.

Human rights advocate Bianca Jagger will hand the Amnesty International petition to Vedanta Resources, which plans to expand a mine and refinery in Orissa on the east coast of the country.

Vedanta Resources plans to mine for bauxite in the Niyamgiri Hills, which are sacred to the indigenous Dongria Kondh community.

The mine will also threaten the community's rights to water, food, health and work. More...
