YouTube video shames Russian police into prosecuting daughter of powerful official...

Russian police have been shamed into promising to prosecute the daughter of a powerful official who drove her car at high speed into two women, killing one and seriously injuring the other.

Despite horrific CCTV video footage that appears to leave no doubt that the official's daughter, Anna Shavenkova, is guilty of reckless driving and manslaughter, police in the Siberian city of Irkutsk have yet to file charges almost three months after the event.

Critics allege that their reluctance to get tough with 28 year-old Ms Shavenkova is because she is a consultant for the ruling pro-Kremlin United Russia party, while her mother, Ludmila, is the head of the local electoral commission. Russia, and before it the Soviet Union, has a long and depressing tradition of covering up accidents that might cast officials or their offspring in a negative light. More...
