The shot chimp heard round the world, a coded racist cartoon?


Did cartoonist Sean Delonas intend for his cartoon, which ran in the New York Post on Wednesday, to be racist? Or was it, as the newspaper claims, "clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut" which "broadly mocks Washington's efforts to revive the economy"?

Although we all have our own take on what this cartoon may or may not mean, nobody knows for sure what exactly was going through Delonas's mind when he created it. But if we are to take the artist and the paper's word for it, this was – at the very least – an extremely sloppy and poorly executed sketch. More...
