Singapore bloggers pay last respects to JB Jeyaretman...

Dear Friends,

The passing on of Mr. JB Jeyaratnam is a sad day for all Singaporeans.

JBJ, as he is affectionately known, is one man who believes in sticking resolutely to his principles to the very end.

To JBJ, the Westminster model of Parliamentary democracy is the only one worth emulating.

To JBJ, the many tweakings of our political model are at best compromises, at worse these are serious attempts to unfairly entrench the ruling party.

To some JBJ is a hero, to others a failure. There are yet others who feel that he could have played a greater role in the history of this proud little red dot, called Singapore. If only he would yield a little.

History will be the ultimate judge.

Mr. JB Jeyaratnam, May you rest in peace.

  1. "If only you yield a little" you say....hahahaha....isn't that the most beautiful thing about this man......he doesn't yield, he is a fighter, not a poet....just imagine, you one man.....trying to convince one million people, nobody said that the current govt is bad to the extreme, if you compare us to other countries, we are better off, but what this man wanted was rights, human rights.....rather than ppl being treated like robots, he wanted more voices in the governing of the country...and lost. I believe that to yield was not of what his stand could be, for he didnt want a policy to change, he wanted a whole lots of governing methods to change, one should appreciate his aspirations, not his folly, he believe in what should be done, not negotiate to achieve something, in negotiation there is 2 winning party, but in confrontation it isnt the same....looking at our current opposition, there are there, sitting there, nothing much they can do, theu come up and propose one or two, but in the end, tey mellow down, without much of a fight. Good tactics to keep oneself employed i believe, but still nothings change, cost of livng goes up....our opposition dun fight, they accomadate...i'd rather the ppl of the current opposition wards vote the govt in and enjoy the benefits that the wards of the govt constituency are enjoying....or move to the wards hahahah...have offtrack a lot...but anyway...JB fought a lonly war, dun really understand what he really has against the governtment that he hate them to the core, but for him to lost everything that he had for his purpose of fight, makes him one damm good Polititian. Maybe in years to come, onemight finally realise what he has been trying to convey, both vocally and in writtings.....till then Rest IN peace...you deserve it.

  2. Thanks for your comment, Anonymous! I grew up in Singapore but left the island just as JBJ was beginning to make the headlines, so I never really got to know much about him, except through friends and family. However, the reasons that pushed me out of Singapore were exactly the same reasons that this man fought against. One chose to stay and fight while the other preferred to leave, the question in my mind being: is it worth your while to fight for a self-satisfied and smug population of well-fed people who are probably not interested in being free? That was, and still is, the question...
